The City of Miramar received national designation as a Tree City USA community from the non-profit Arbor Day Foundation for the 18th year. Tree City USA designation is the framework for a healthy, sustainable urban forestry program in the City.

Deputy City Manager Whittingham Gordon stated, “We are proud to have once again earned Tree City USA status. Trees improve the visual appeal of a neighborhood, increase property values and help clean the air – ultimately contributing to a sense of place and quality of life in Miramar.”

Trees enrich our lives in numerous ways by providing cooling shade, attracting wildlife and purifying our water. Additional benefits include reduction in energy costs, preventing soil erosion and stormwater management.

The Tree City USA Program has been greening up cities and towns across the USA since 1976. It is a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees. More than 3,400 cities have made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA. The City of Miramar achieved Tree City USA status by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

The Arbor Day Foundation is a non-profit, environmental and educational organization of nearly one million members, with a mission to inspire people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees. More information on the Foundation and its programs can be found at www.arborday.org.
