A cappella group Take 6 is the final act scheduled to perform this season at Pinecrest Gardens’ “JazzAid Live at the Banyan Bowl,” a COVID-19 relief concert series.
The group has performed with and been commended by legends such as Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Ben E. King, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Al Jarreau, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, and Whitney Houston. Quincy Jones heralded the group as the “baddest vocal cats on the planet.”
Formed at Oakwood College in Alabama in 1980, Take 6 has been together for decades, citing faith, friendship and love for music as the glue that has held them together. Their various Grammy Awards are in categories ranging from Soul, Jazz, and R&B.
For jazz fans, the upcoming performance will be broadcast live from the acoustically magnificent Banyan Bowl at Pinecrest Gardens and live streamed into music lovers’ homes.
A generous percentage of the proceeds from the COVID-19 relief fundraiser will go directly to World Central Kitchen, an organization that uses the power of food to heal and strengthen communities through times of crisis and beyond that was founded in 2010 by Chef José Andrés.
Due to the pandemic and social distancing requirements, JazzAid Live at the Banyan Bowl is available via pay-per-view, livestream only. Showtime is Saturday, Apr. 10, at 8 p.m. The cost is $15 for this final performance. Tickets can be purchased online at www.pinecrestgardens.org/jazzaid.
Now in its 11th year, Pinecrest Gardens’ all-star jazz series has brought some of jazz music’s hottest and biggest names to South Florida. The series sells out year after year as a result of a thriving community of local music lovers.
But due to the pandemic, Pinecrest Gardens was faced with potentially having to cancel the upcoming season. Instead, Pinecrest Gardens reimagined its signature event to keep the music alive and benefit the COVID-19 food relief efforts of celebrated chef Jose Andres’ non-profit organization, World Central Kitchen.
Since 1980, Take 6 (Claude McKnight, Mark Kibble, Joel Kibble, Dave Thomas, Alvin Chea and Khristian Dentley) has brought vocals to their worldwide audiences. April 2018 marked the release of their 16th album, aptly titled ICONIC (SRG/Universal) and the debut of a PBS special, The Summit, alongside The Manhattan Transfer.
The recording, ICONIC, is composed of the songs the sextet loves to perform both on stage and for the pure joy of lending their voices to songs that have taken on a greater meaning to them and to their audiences over their career of nearly four decades.
Take 6 has admirably and adeptly crossed most musical genres, from straight jazz to pop to adult R&B, doo wop to blues. Like a fine-tuned vocal orchestra (Alvin, bass; Khristian, baritone; Claude, Mark and Joel, tenors), the group continues to push the boundaries of creativity and musical genius with every new release, and with their ever-evolving live performances. Any singer who aspires for vocal excellence cannot overlook the contributions these men have made to music.
Among the honors Take 6 has enjoyed is their induction into The Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
