An immigrant from Denmark and mother of three young children, Karina Schmitt opened Sophie Publishing House Inc. in 2019 in Homestead when she published her book When the Germans Came on behalf of Danish World War II veteran Ole Bjornsen.
She has since grown the publishing company to include over a dozen authors from many corners of the world. In October 2020, she moved her office to Coral Gables and in February 2021, she opened Sophie’s Corner bookstore and coffee shop in Miami International Mall in Doral.
Schmitt is a strong advocate for reading with children, connecting readers and authors, and uncensored nonfiction literature of all ages, as a result of the censorship that Denmark experienced during the war years, which Bjornsen discusses in his memoirs. Every month Sophie’s Corner offers Meet & Greet events with authors, such as Cindy Spray of Crying Without Tears on Apr. 24.
Because of Schmitt’s love for literature, Sophie’s Corner will celebrate William Shakespeare’s 457th birthday with birthday cake for all buyers. The event is on Apr. 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. where Schmitt will read children’s versions of Shakespeare’s classical stories, such as excerpts of Romeo and Juliet and talk about Shakespeare’s incredible life relative to literature contributions to the world.
Sophie Publishing House holds periodic seminars for writers and authors to on how to improve their manuscripts, develop their characters more in detail, write memoirs, and preparing your manuscript for publishing. The seminars are announced on their website www.SophiePublishing.com.
Sophie’s Corner is a friendly bookstore and coffee shop offering coffees, teas, pastries, and breads from Europe and the Americas as well as some from the Middle East, such as Turkish Apple chai. They work with European bakers providing original treats from her home country Denmark, as well as Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Cuba.
