For a limited time, locals and visitors can enjoy house-made honey amenities directly sourced from the hotel’s rooftop honeybee colonies
Mandarin Oriental, Miami is celebrating Earth Day with some help from its honeybees – more than 210,000 of them, in fact. From April 22–25, the hotel will offer specially created honey-based amenities for guests, made from honey sourced from its beehive colonies on its rooftop.
“Bee” indulgent with the following Earth Day offerings:
- Special honey-infused drinks & desserts: La Mar by Gaston Acurio, the hotel’s Peruvian restaurant, will be hosting a collaboration dinner on April 22 with two acclaimed Peruvian chefs Francesca Ferreyros and Diego Muñoz. The menu will include a Bougainvillea Mousse dessert with lemon crème and Peruvian amaranth, garnished with the hotel’s honey. Separately, MO Bar & Lounge will offer the refreshing Bees Knees cocktail, made from gin, lemon, and honey.
- Soothing spa treatments: The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Miami will offer two calming treatments incorporating the freshly harvested honey: a Milk and Honey Manicure & Pedicure, for a gentle yet hydrating treatment for your hands and feet, and the Milk and Honey Tranquil Delight for the ultimate relaxation. It begins with a full-body milk and honey scrub, rejuvenating dry and tired skin, followed by a back, neck and shoulder massage, leaving the body, mind and spirit grounded and refreshed.
In addition to the dining and spa amenities, Mandarin Oriental, Miami will commemorate Earth Day by installing new hives for each of the seven bee colonies on its roof, with its design mimicking Miami and its colorful architecture. The rooftop will also feature a new colorful mural by local artist Chan Shepherd, celebrating the local landscape and its surrounding flora and fauna, using bright colors found throughout Miami. Shepherd’s murals can be found around South Florida, including Miami-Wynwood, West Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale, including the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport. He incorporates his sustainable and nature-focused lifestyle into his artwork, using recyclable spray paint cans as well as sugar paint, which delivers the highest quality results with minimal impact to the environment. Although the hives and mural cannot be viewed first-hand, guests will be able to check out the colorful rooftop display from their televisions in all guest rooms from Friday, April 16.
“Following the unpredictability of 2020, Earth Month brings the chance for new life, new ideas, and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our planet. We are pleased to celebrate with our team of rooftop honeybees, by honoring their resourcefulness and the many ways we can use their honey within our restaurants, as well as in The Spa,” said Robert Lowe, General Manager of Mandarin Oriental, Miami. “This initiative is one of various measures we’re taking on property to ensure we’re doing our part to work towards a more sustainable future – for our environment, communities, and guests.”
Mandarin Oriental, Miami will also offer a beekeeping course led by its head beekeeper for students of The WOW Center, an organization that provides quality programs and support to individuals with developmental disabilities. Due to COVID-19, the center ceased in-person programming and Mandarin Oriental, Miami has stepped in to support the organization by offering virtual programming and now contributes content once a month.
Bees play a vital role in pollinating vegetables and fruits, in addition to their production of honey and wax. Due to the alarming and unprecedented decline rate in its population, Mandarin Oriental initiated a beekeeping program, with the objective of all hotels to invest in a minimum of two beehives, either to be housed on property or by working with a local beekeeper off-site. This initiative is part of the Group’s larger sustainability goals of implementing a strong sustainability governance structure across the brand. More details can be found about Mandarin Oriental’s sustainability initiatives in its annual sustainability report.
