Women’s History Month Virtual Exhibit and High School Students from Miramar Honored for Women’s Month Essays
MIRAMAR, FL (Wednesday, March 24, 2021) – The Miramar Cultural Center (MCC) has partnered with the Smithsonian Institution to offer a virtual exhibit, Picturing Women Inventors, in honor of Women’s History Month. Picturing Women Inventors is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), in collaboration with the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation and the United States Patent and Trademark Office and is sponsored by Lyda Hill Philanthropies IF/THEN Initiative and Ericsson.
Throughout American History, women with diverse backgrounds and interests have created inventions that change our lives every day. The virtual exhibit can be viewed online at www.MiramarCulturalCenter.org. Viewers can learn about a variety of inventions by female inventors ranging from the inventor of non-toxic batteries to the inventor of curling irons, germ-killing water filters and more. The virtual exhibit features additional learning resources for middle and high school students.
Also, in honor of Women’s History Month, Miramar High School students were invited to pen an essay to honor the extraordinary achievements of American women under the theme, Vice President Kamala D. Harris- Achievement, Opportunity Precedence and Purpose. Two winners were selected from the entries submitted- Tori Ragin and Maya Saleh- both from Everglades High School. The students will be recognized at the Miramar Commission Meeting on March 24, 2021 and will have an excerpt from their essays read. The winners will also be featured on the City’s website and on social media and they will both receive certificates signed by City of Miramar Officials as well as an autographed copy of The Ambitious Collective written by Miramar Cultural Affairs Director, Camasha Cevieux.
Cevieux stated, “I am proud to be a woman leader and even prouder to be offering programming through the Miramar Cultural Center that honors other females in our society in honor of Women’s History Month. I encourage the community to check out the virtual exhibit presented by the Smithsonian Institution. Special thanks to all the students from high schools in our area who submitted an entry into the essay contest. All the entries were intriguing and heart-felt.”
