Positive People in Pinecrest : Ella Hannon
Ella Hannon

Westminster Christian School senior Ella Hannon has been accepted at Florida State University and William and Mary College. She recently visited both as part of her decision-making process and chose FSU.

“They were both beautiful,” she says. “I was impressed. It’s a hard decision.”

Both schools are in college towns, which is a plus for her.

“I think I would focus on science at either college,” she says. “I’m willing to explore other subjects, too. I like to learn. I like to explore. I’m excited to be able to explore many subjects and meet the people and see what they are into, too.”

Currently, she’s going in as undecided but she’s interested in majoring in either biology or psychology.

“I’ve always been interested in psychology,” she says. “I’ve read articles about it on my own.”

She says if she gets the biology degree, she will likely go on to medical school.

At WCS, she’s a member of Mu Alpha Theta, societies. Rho Kappa, the Foreign Language Honor Society, the National Art Honor Society, the National Honor Society, and she’s on the executive board for the National English Honor Society.

She’s been a volunteer for Made with Love in tenth grade, a South Florida Foster and Adoptive Parent Association.

“We worked with kids and families, holding events for them,” she says. “When the parents were in the foster care classes, we would watch the kids for them.”

She’s the vice president of the Girl Kind Project Club.

“We try to work to inspire young girls to be supportive of each other and know they have a voice,” she says. “We work with underprivileged kids in various communities.”

One of the projects was the Door to Kindness.

“We put up a door at the Pinecrest Library and had people write messages,” she says.

She’s the blood drive coordinator for NHS.

“I manage and coordinate a number of blood drives at the school,” she says. “There have been a lot of setbacks due to COVID.”

COVID makes the logistics of blood drives difficult – there has been a shortage of donations as a result.

“I had to work with the school to keep it on social media, and get permission to go to different classes and sign up,” she says. “And make sure I had volunteers to keep track of the amount of people, as well as people were comfortable and know that COVID safe protocols are being followed.”

She coordinated three this year already and hopes to get in one more blood drive before the end of the school year.

Along with her science course, Hannon has taken art classes throughout high school. She attended the art magnet program at Southwood in middle school. She likes painting landscapes and works with clay when doing 3-D art.

At school, she participated in the math lab as a tutor.

She’s been a nurse’s assistant at the nurse’s station at the Keystone Camp in North Carolina where she organized medications and helped the campers with minor injuries.

A couple of summers she also did internships at a doctor’s office in North Carolina.

“I found everything to be super fascinating,” she says. “I loved interacting with the people.”

At home, she volunteered at WCS’s summertime Fun Camp.

The summer of 2019, Hannon participated in the medicine and health care program for National Student Leadership Conference which was held at the University of Miami.

She’s volunteered at the Books and Books Suniland location with reading time, and arts and crafts events for the kids. She worked at the bookstore’s Children’s Tent at the Miami Book Fair International.
