President Biden commemorated Juneteenth as a federal holiday. I am proud to say that the City of West Park recognized its importance and made June 19th an official employee holiday for our workers.
Juneteenth, also known as “Freedom Day” and “Emancipation Day”, is a significant day in our history. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, federal troops rode into Galveston, Texas to inform enslaved people that they were indeed free.
Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery and is an opportunity to reflect on the shameful and enduring legacy of racism in our country, and to commit to doing better.
We must remain relentless in our pursuit of both equality and equity. While we may never take away the stain of slavery, Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday is a momentous step forward, but we still have more work to do.
We must commit to advancing racial justice and equality – for the eyes of the future are looking back at us and praying we are beyond our own time.
