As a hub for everything from delicious cuisine, to world class outdoor events, to a record number of NFL Super Bowl games, Miami Gardens is the prime spot for the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix in South Florida. At the start of a multi-year deal, 2022 will see the first staging of Formula 1 racing in the Sunshine State since 1959.
A Brief History
Formula 1 racing involves a worldwide series featuring open-wheel, single seat cars. Now often simply called F1, its roots date back to 1906, when the first Grand Prix event took place on public roads in Le Mans, France. In 1950, the first official World Championship Grand Prix was staged at the Silverstone circuit in England, where 120,000 spectators reportedly gathered to watch history made. Since then, Grand Prix tracks have been constructed all around the world.
The “Formula” in Formula 1 refers to the set of rules that drivers and mechanics must follow, and the number one represents the grading certification participating cars must receive from the governing body — Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). The Formula 1 Championship is made up of 23 races, on 5 continents across the world. This three-day occasion includes two practice sessions, qualifying and culminates Sunday with race day, and the main event. A Formula 1 Grand Prix is set over 190 miles, determining the number of laps and must be completed within 2 hours for safety reasons.
F1 in Miami Gardens
Although Miami Gardens has hosted its fair share of sporting events — from Super Bowls to Miami Tennis Opens 一 the multi-year F1 deal will bring a new wave of fans to the City.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, said that the circuit created around the Hard Rock is expected to deliver exciting racing while also ensuring “a positive and lasting contribution to the people in the local community.”
Among the benefits of the tourism boost expected is the direct impact F1 will have on local small businesses. Some local restaurants will even have the opportunity to sell onsite without a buyout fee to the stadium. Another substantial benefit to the community is the introduction of paid internships for high school and college students, and the development of an F1 STEM program for local elementary, middle and high schools.
As the world watches, Miami Gardens is racing towards a brighter future.
