In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Miami-Dade County Commission partnered with the American Cancer Society at the Oct. 5 commission meeting to announce the 2021 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Campaign. The campaign has been in effect for more than two decades, raising awareness and funds to help fight against the deadly disease.
The presentation was co-prime sponsored by Commissioners Sally Heyman and Rebeca Sosa as well as chair Jose “Pepe” Diaz. Each co-prime sponsor, along with Commissioners Danielle Cohen Higgins, Eileen Higgins and vice chair Oliver G. Gilbert, III, pledged to donate $5,000 to support the cause.
“Today we kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Miami-Dade’s engagement,” Commissioner Heyman said. “I’m excited so many colleagues and county employees did the ‘Pink Streak’ Challenge: visible pink hair streaks bringing greater awareness to Think Pink Fighting for a Cure for Breast Cancer.”
Commissioners Heyman and Sosa are both breast cancer survivors. Commissioner Sosa shared her survivor story and offered her thanks to those who continue to support research efforts.
“It was so heartwarming to see the outpouring of support for breast cancer awareness from the county family today,” Commissioner Sosa said. “As a breast cancer survivor, I know just how important early detection is in helping to fight this terrible disease and I urge women everywhere to get screened early. I pray for the day when we can finally call an end to all forms of cancer and know that together we can make it happen.”
Diaz honored his colleagues as well as other Miami-Dade County employees who were recognized for overcoming breast cancer.
“I’m honored to join county employees along with my colleagues and cancer survivors Commissioners Heyman and Sosa in recognizing the importance of raising awareness and funds to find a cure for cancer,” Diaz said. “The support from our employees is greatly appreciated, and with it we become stronger in our fight to end cancer.”
To continue raising awareness, Miami-Dade County and the American Cancer Society will host the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, at LoanDepot Park. Since 2007 the event has raised more than $2.5 million for breast cancer research.
