In celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his belief that every individual deserves the right to dream and achieve that dream, the Miami Marlins have announced the Miami Marlins Foundation 5000 Role Models of Excellence First-Generation Scholarship Endowment. The endowment will award two annual scholarships in perpetuity to one junior and one senior student at Florida International University, who also are alumni of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project. The scholarships will annually total approximately $4,500 combined.
Additionally, the Miami Marlins will host a Day of Service on Friday, January 14 ahead of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, featuring volunteers from the front office and Marlins Alumnus Charles Johnson. The Marlins MLK Day of Service will include two drive-thru food distributions, in partnership with Feeding South Florida, and a virtual education lesson for all 4th and 5th grade students at Lenora B. Smith Elementary, a Miami Marlins Foundation Slugger Schoolhouse.
The Marlins will host a food distribution at Lenora B. Smith Elementary for families from the school and at Gwen Cherry Park in Liberty City at 10 a.m., which is open to families from the neighborhood. In total, approximately 375 families will receive boxes of food. At each food distribution, pamphlets regarding the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be handed out.
Last year, the Miami Marlins Foundation launched the inaugural season of Jr. RBI at Gwen Cherry Park in Liberty City presented by UHealth-The University of Miami Health System, a free youth outreach program for children ages 5 through 12.
