Culture Shock Miami will present The Real James Bond… Was Dominican, Friday and Saturday, Feb 25-26, at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium. This transformative play explores how a young actor-to-be came to discover that a Dominican man, Porfirio Rubirosa (or “Rubi”) was Ian Fleming’s inspiration for James Bond. Each performance starts at 8 p.m., at 2901 West Flagler St., Miami, FL 33135.
The Real James Bond… Was Dominican is billed as a “young man’s guide to love, sex, color, code-switching, white-washing, success, fake-it-till-you-make-it, and the roller coaster of finding one’s true self” and includes immersive projections and a live percussion score.
The star and creator of the play, Christopher Rivas, is an award-winning storyteller, two-time Moth winner, Ariane de Rothschild Social Impact Fellow, actor (Call Me Kat), essayist and social commentator (New York Times, Zocalo, Boston Globe, SwipeLife, Level), filmmaker, podcast host, and a Ph.D. candidate in Expressive Arts for Global Health. The show was developed with and directed by Daniel Banks.
“We’re excited to present this performance at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium,” said Christina Tassy-Beauvoir, Cultural Projects Administrator and Program Manager of Culture Shock Miami. “Quite often, characters portrayed on the big screen or in the media alienate certain people or populations. We hope that this story will inspire our young audience, just as the creator of the play, to embrace and honor their true self, and impress upon them that greatness can come from any background.”
The James Bond series, which celebrates a fictional British Secret Service agent, was conceived in 1953 by writer Ian Fleming. The character – also known by his code name, “007” – was featured in Fleming’s 12 novels and two short-story collections, as well as adaptations for television, radio, graphic novels, video games, and film. The films are one of the longest continually running series and have grossed more than $7.04 billion in total – the fifth-highest-grossing film series to date.
Due to strong language and mature themes, this show is recommended for ages 18 and up. Teens and young adults up to age 22 may buy tickets for $5 with Culture Shock Miami. With the purchase of one $5 ticket for someone within the program’s age range, a second $5 ticket can be purchased for an individual of any age to join them.
