As governments around the world and around the block race to fight climate change, Miami-Dade County has a big advantage – FPL’s Turkey Point Clean Energy Center.
Yes, Turkey Point is a critical part of our solution to slashing greenhouse-gas emissions, and it has been for decades.
You might be surprised that most of the electricity that powers the homes and businesses in Miami-Dade County is emissions-free and comes from Turkey Point’s nuclear units.
Nuclear gets a bad rap and unfairly so. It is the largest source of carbon-free electricity that can provide reliable power 24/7. That’s important if you care about our planet and want to keep your air conditioner on full blast around-the-clock.
I am a fan of solar. FPL’s solar energy farm on Krome Ave is one of the largest in Florida. But renewables can’t do it alone. Turkey Point gives us a carbon-free bedrock to power our growing population and stay on track with our carbon goals. And because Turkey Point is built more than 20-feet above sea level, it will be there to power us for decades to come.
Turkey Point gives us another environmental advantage. The site’s more than 11,000 acres of cooling canals and surrounding land provide the ideal habitat for native plants and wildlife.
By the way, those once troubled waters from years back are now in good shape. In 2021, the canals reached their lowest salinity levels since the 1970s. FPL’s long-term plan is working, and the progress has been recognized by environmentalists and regulators.
The biggest fans of the improved canal system are the American Crocodiles that call it home. Last year, more than 550 baby crocs were hatched at Turkey Point – the highest number in the plant’s history. Mating season is now in full swing, and I soon plan to visit Turkey Point to see first-hand how the crocs are “making out” so to speak. Stay tuned.
