Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Kendall Campus recently revealed the newly renovated Learning Commons, a 25,000-square-foot facility that will house a creative studio, a multidisciplinary study hall as well as student success and writing labs.

The occasion was commemorated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony presided by MDC president Madeline Pumariega; executive vice president and provost Dr. Malou Harrison, and MDC Kendall and Hialeah Campus president Dr. Anthony Cruz, with members of the College’s District Board of Trustees and the presidents of all MDC campuses in attendance.

During the event, the campus also dedicated a Seal of MDC that was placed at the entrance of the Learning Commons followed by the placement of a time capsule. The capsule included preserved objects and publications memorializing

student and faculty accomplishments, including the investiture of MDC’s first female president. The capsule contains periodicals showcasing some of the most significant events of 2021 in the United States and abroad. It will be reopened on Feb. 15, 2072.

“2021 was a year to remember and memorialize for future generations. From the world coping with the pandemic to remote learning, adapting to a new way of life, civil unrest in the United States, to the investiture of the first female president at Miami Dade College,” said Dr. Anthony Cruz, president of Hialeah and Kendall Campuses. “Fifty years from now, a new generation will be able to learn and share information about these significant events.”

Located on a 185-acre tract of trees and lakes, MDC’s Kendall Campus opened its doors in 1967. It houses a wide variety of academic programs and specialized institutes. The campus features 13 buildings equipped with the latest technologies, a wellness center, athletic fields, and an Olympic-size pool; it is the home of MDC athletics. MDC Kendall offers a comprehensive range of learning opportunities and provides students with transfer programs designed to facilitate the move to four-year institutions, programs that enhance and modernize professional and technical skills, and preparatory programs for licensing or certification.
