Nicklaus Children’s pediatric experts are available to discuss the following topics during the month of March:
- Talking About War with Children
- The current war in Europe between Russia and Ukraine may have your young ones asking questions. Pediatric psychologist are ready to discuss parent concerns about when and how to talk to their children about the war.
-
-
- While children around the world may not understand what is happening in Ukraine, they may have questions about the images, stories and conversations they are exposed to. Ignoring or avoiding the topic can lead to children feeling lost, alone and more scared, which can affect their health and well-being.

- Epilepsy
o In honor of this year’s Purple Day on March 26, an international grassroots effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy worldwide, pediatric neurologists are available to discuss epilepsy and seizures in children.
- Epilepsy is the most common childhood brain disorder in the United States. Nearly 3 million Americans have epilepsy, and about 450,000 of them are under the age of 17.
- Improvements in epilepsy treatment in recent years have made the condition more manageable. Many new anti-seizure medications are available and more are being tested. In addition to newer medications, alternative treatments such as surgical procedures, medical devices, and dietary therapies, are also available for children and teens who continue to have seizures while on medication.
- Kidney Disease
o March is National Kidney Month! Nicklaus Children’s pediatric nephrologists are ready to discuss the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases in children.
-
-
- The prevalence of pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD) ranges from 15 to 74.7 cases per 1 million children. Mortality among children who progress to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is 30 to 50 times higher compared to that in the general population.
- Chronic kidney disease (CKD) does not go away with treatment and tends to get worse over time. CKD eventually leads to kidney failure, described as end-stage kidney disease (ESRD) when treated with a kidney transplant or blood-filtering treatments called dialysis.

- Nutrition
- In honor of National Nutrition Month in March, health and nutrition professionals are available to share their knowledge and tips with the community to raise awareness about the importance of good nutrition for children.
