Save Saturday, May 7, from 1 to 4 p.m., for a great affair at the Coral Gables Woman’s Club, 1001 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd., benefitting CGWC’s free children’s dental clinic.
This pre Mother’s Day event is a great way to treat your mom, aunt, best friend or wife. Look for a high-end silent auction, providing an opportunity to buy something special for that special someone.
This year’s annual fundraiser, co-chaired by Iris Segui and Kristina Jackson, embraces the theme of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” You can expect lots of black dresses and hats made popular by Audrey Hepburn’s role as Holly in the movie. Come in black or not, there will be plenty of photo ops.
Tickets are $85 per person and $55 for those under 21 years of age. Supporting this event helps provide free dental care for Miami-Dade County children of the working poor.
Guests will enjoy finger sandwiches, scones, delicious desserts, soothing tea, music, and unlimited bubbly as well as a Mojito Bar compliments of Bacardi. To book your reservation, visit gfwccoralgableswomansclub.org.
While the Coral Gables Woman’s Club ongoing support is focused on the free clinic, it also supports numerous other charities and programs and their monthly Gringo Bingo at Clutch Bingo is one way those efforts are funded.
The club will share the proceeds of the next event on Tuesday, May 3, with the Refugee Assistance Alliance helping relocated Afghans who worked with the U.S. as translators, scouts, journalists, etc. and had to flee the country with nothing but a suitcase and the clothes on their backs. To RSVP for the event or make a donations to GWC for the effort, email gloria@cnews.net.
Speaking of fun events, coming up soon is A Safe Haven for Newborns Golf Tournament on May 13, at the Trump Resort. This is always a great day with funds raised helping save lives of 360 babies at last count. Nick Silverio, founder and CEO of ASHFN, a man who has never taken a paycheck and works 24/7, is a wonder. Nick invites golfers to join them for a great day. Foursomes are $1,000 and individual entries are $250. For more information or to sign up or sponsor, visit asafehavenfornewborns.com.
On the cultural front, it appears poetry this month may be found in the most unusual places and we have O, Miami to thank for this. For those unfamiliar with O, Miami, it is a nonprofit organization that builds community through literature. They not only produce their O, Miami Poetry Festival but also produce a publishing imprint, a poets-in-schools residency, and other programs that democratize access to literature and make us rethink the important place of the literary arts in our society. The O, Miami Poetry Festival, their biggest program, already is in high gear.
In fact, on Apr. 10, as part of DHT’s cooking in historic places with Lucia Meneses, folks gathered at the historic Coral Gables Woman’s Club for an event titled “With but a Crumb: Baking & Emily Dickenson in the Garden” as a partnership with O, Miami. Lucia baked a Coconut Cake recipe from one of Emily Dickenson’s books after which they read some of her poems.

Area GFWC District 11 Women’s Clubs have recently produced some fun events to benefit charity. On Apr. 2, Coco Plum Woman’s Club held a Brunch & Broadway fundraiser with entertainment provided by the FIU School of Music. Guests enjoyed some great show tunes from such classics as My Fair Lady and Phantom of the Opera for starters.
Club President Sue Nichols noted that proceeds from this event were directed to the Max Gruver Scholarship Fund. Kudos to co-chairs Carol Nobles, Charlene Feldner and Barbara Wexler, and their committee on a lovely affair.
Closing out the month, look for the 41st annual Lebanese Festival on Apr. 29 (6 p.m.–1 a.m.), Apr. 30 (6 p.m.-2 a.m.) and May 1 (noon–11 p.m.) at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church, 2055 Coral Way. This is a great family event and cultural experience everyone is sure to love. Attendees will have an opportunity to taste the authentic Lebanese food and sweets while also enjoying Lebanese Music and Dance. For more information, visit ololebanon.org.
Until next time, keep making each day count and share an act of kindness every day.
