Interim Chief Leonard “Lenny” Burgess has been appointed the new chief of police for the Miramar Police Department. Chief Burgess’ career spans 37 years of dedicated service to public safety. He has served the Miramar community since 2016.
Chief Burgess was born and raised in South Florida and is of African American and Panamanian decent. He followed his father’s footsteps, joining the U.S. Marine Corps, and later became a police officer. Chief Burgess rose through the ranks, supervising numerous districts, bureaus and task forces for various agencies. He retired from the Miami-Dade Police Department as a division chief, but would not stay retired long. In 2008, he was appointed deputy director of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department and in 2014 chief of police for North Miami. In 2016 he joined the Miramar Police Department as an assistant chief and was appointed interim chief in April of 2021.
In addition to numerous certifications, Chief Burgess holds a Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, is a graduate of FBI National Academy and the Senior Management Institute for Police Executives at Harvard’s Kennedy School. He has earned numerous awards and recognitions for his many outstanding achievements. Chief Burgess is also the past president of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and volunteers as a cadre leader with 5000 Role Models of Excellence, mentoring young men in our community.

I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to lead the men and women of this distinguished department. We take great pride in delivering unparalleled police services to our diverse Miramar community. Ensuring public safety, while maintaining the highest standards of professional ethics and integrity is our pledge to you.
Our department has been at the forefront of modern policing, committed to 21st Century Policing strategies and the Eight Can’t Wait initiatives, promoting effective crime reduction while building public trust, reducing Use of Force incidents and increasing accountability.
Our dedicated professionals strive each day to strengthen community relationships, mentor youths, support senior programs, and deliver exceptional public safety and code compliance services, while ensuring a safer community and enhancing the quality of life in Miramar.

As your chief, I believe in the importance of developing future leaders that are dedicated, compassionate and will instill a culture that inspires the succession of excellence. Leading with intention, providing a clarity of purpose that will motivate our team to carry out our mission is my goal. As we continue recruiting a whole new generation of police officers that reflect our community, rest assured that the future of this agency will continue our commitment of providing the best service to our residents and businesses.
