The Evensky & Katz Charitable Fund at the Coral Gables Community Foundation has established itself as a major philanthropic player in South Florida at a critical time when many local non-profit organizations have been pinched by high expenses and thin donations.

Fund holder David S. Evensky, principal at Evensky & Katz/Foldes Wealth Management, is the board chair of the Friendship Circle of Miami, sits on the board of the American Jewish Committee and is a member of the Society of Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Evensky established the Evensky & Katz Charitable Fund at the Coral Gables Community Foundation in 2006 and it has served as the central vehicle for the firm’s charitable giving. This fund was the engine behind the “Motivated Youth Program,” which teaches philanthropy to young people by having them gather data and then decide how to distribute the grant money to youth-related charities and nonprofit organizations.

“It’s inspirational… helping the community and its youth live up to their philanthropic potential is simply more impactful with the deep bench of support provided by the Coral Gables Community Foundation,” Evensky said. “We’re freed up to focus on breaking through to youth and crafting the micro philanthropy model, when we leave the mechanics of operating our Donor Advised Fund to advisors we trust. It has served us well for 16 years.”

Several of the firm’s partners live by the same principles of generosity and hold leadership positions with non-profit organizations across the local community, including the Baptist Health Foundation, Coral Gables Art Cinema, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and Pridelines, among others. Michael Walsh, CFP, is a wealth manager and partner at Evensky & Katz and is chair-elect of the board at Coral Gables Community Foundation.

David Evensky also has established other funds at the Foundation, including the Elio’s Kitchen Charitable Fund (2021), and the Evensky & Katz Charity Classic Golf Tournament Fund (2016). The total disbursements from the funds topped the $1.2 million mark in April.

“David Evensky’s generous commitment to South Florida — enabling young residents to learn the ropes of philanthropy and to directly feel the rewards of making a difference — will bear gifts for the community and elsewhere for generations to come,” said Mary Snow, Coral Gables Community Foundation president and CEO. “David is one of the most visionary fund holders we’ve come to know, and we’re proud to have his trust and manage his charitable giving.”

The Coral Gables Community Foundation manages 90 Donor Advised Funds for local families and individuals who use the foundation to manage the investment and distribution of their charitable giving. Donors are able to request disbursements over time from their fund to their favorite causes and charities, while the foundation provides the tax deduction and handles all of the back end and administrative support.

Led by community leaders, the Coral Gables Community Foundation works to improve the quality of life for those who live, work, learn and play in the city. For over 30 years, the foundation has been at the forefront of the evolving needs of Coral Gables by effectively bringing together beneficiaries and benefactors to fund programs with the greatest impact and benefit to “The City Beautiful.”
