Miami Parking Authority (MPA) was recognized by the International Parking & Mobility Institute (IPMI) with an Award of Excellence in Innovation in a Mobility, Transportation of Parking category for Freeflow parking at LoanDepot Park. IPMI Awards of Excellence showcase outstanding parking and transportation facilities and innovative programs to further the parking, transportation, and mobility industry. Entries are reviewed by expert judges from every segment of the parking, mobility, and transportation industry and ranked across a broad spectrum of criteria.
“This is a momentous time in Miami when the city is experiencing a social, economic, and technology-based revival, and we are pleased that MPA is on the cusp of innovation and creativity to help define this transformation for the betterment of the community,” said chief executive officer Alejandra “Alex” Argudin. “Digital technologies are transforming and streamlining the way we live, work and spend our leisure time.”
Located in the middle of a residential area, traffic gridlock during event days at loanDepot ballpark became a source of irritation to the community. In essence, the critical challenge faced when attending an event at the venue was the time taken getting from the last mile into a parking space. The last mile-stretch used to take as much as 45-120 minutes.
With the knowledge that cashiering processes were a contributing factor to traffic congestion, the main friction point, MPA took the time and this unique opportunity to forge a collaboration with the Miami Marlins, PayByPhone, and other vendors to integrate various technology resources aimed at making parking seamless, safer and accessible to all. The unique implementation of free-flow parking in Miami was designed to offer the utmost convenience to venue attendees while improving traffic flow and mobility in and around the facility and creating a touchless payment process.
The Last Mile Challenge is a widespread issue among critical-mass venues in urban spaces. For example, the last mile stretch to reach a parking space used to take up to 45-120 minutes. Whereas with the implementation of free-flow parking, it currently takes fans and eventgoers half the time or less, reducing ingress time by 75% on average. On the other hand, when MPA had attendants collecting payment at the entrance, it took an average of 28-40 seconds to move a three-car queue. In contrast, drivers now go straight through, park, and pay as they enter the venue.
