In March, I sponsored and passed a resolution for National Kidney Month so that, as a City, we can work with our partners to bring awareness to kidney disease, which disproportionately affects our communities. I partnered with Chen Medical to bring Steps to Better Health, a senior walking club, to Miami Gardens. The program gives our seniors more options for physical activity and utilizes our state-of-the-art, indoor walking track at Bunche Park in my district on Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Residents can call Mr. Martin in my office at 786-858-2662 to sign up.
Recent Accomplishments
In April, I hosted a Senior Spring Fling at the senior center in partnership with the Miami Gardens Chamber of Commerce and Chen Medical. We had doctors on hand to answer questions, a trainer who spoke to attendees about the basics of healthy stretches, we presented a nutritional component and we offered giveaways to about 200 seniors.
That month, I released my first quarter community newsletter. I partnered with Kouture Trends to host a women’s empowerment business forum, teaching women how to grow their business. And I hosted a Small Business Owner Wealth Summit with Varetta Huggins of V-Project Management Consulting, designed to teach some of our 4,000 businesses how to get government contracts.
Then in May, I also hosted the Women of Value Empowerment Workshop for entrepreneurs. I hosted the Transportation Infrastructure Power Symposium in conjunction with Florida Memorial University, Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce, In Touch Logistics and State Representative James Bush, explaining access to state and local funding for minority businesses. I also presented an award to the history-making Miami Gardens creators of Crowd Wall Street, the third SEC regulated funding platform in the United States. My goal is to encourage young business owners by celebrating their individual accomplishments and by bringing in experts to help them grow their business.
I wanted to do something extra special for Mother’s Day, so I partnered with FDC Photography to provide mothers in Miami Gardens with a one-on-one photo session, and presented them with flowers. At my May UniTea Town Hall, psychologist Dr. Angela Brinson Brown spoke about the importance of mental health. A lot of our seniors may have emotional stresses or mental health needs to address. I partnered with One Community Alliance Network after Arbor Day to make sure that the seniors in my district had assistance with their home beautification projects. Residents from Seat 3 have also been able to participate in the Citywide beautification project again since July 1st.
I sponsored and passed a resolution for National Caribbean American Heritage Month in June. Also, I hosted A Seat at the Table in conjunction with the Female Development World Organization and Dr. Lavern Deer, Guiding Light Outreach and the Miami Gardens Police Department listening to concerns regarding human trafficking and working together to provide tangible solutions.
Looking Ahead
In July, I will be hosting the 49th Bahamian Independence Party at Bunche Park and I am excited to continue my yearly book bag giveaway in August.
Miami Gardens is the place to be because it’s a very beautiful, family-friendly community where you can live, work and have fun. We have our All-America City designation, we are a very industrious community and we’re becoming a more economy-driven community that attracts people from all over the world. Miami Gardens is a place where you’ll be happy to raise a family, this is where I raised my family and I would highly recommend it.
