Coral Gables Rotarians are excited about the club’s Halloween-themed Chili Cook Off on Sunday, Oct. 30.
This fifth annual event promises fun for all ages, with live music all afternoon, a bounce house, costume contest, chili-tasting contest, silent auction for scholarships, and even a beer tent from Bay 13 Brewery and Restaurant.
Local businesses, non-profits and individuals looking for a good team-building experience or just a fun-filled day are encouraged to sign up to cook and/or support the event as a sponsor. Go to chilichillin.com for all the information.
Lots of great chef teams have registered including the Risk Strategies-Donald Trombley (past club president who is coming all the way from Jacksonville to cook). Other chefs committed are Monster Grass, Woman’s Club of the Village of Historic Overtown, Coral Gables Woman’s Club, and Miami’s Community Newspapers team, to mention a few.
The day before the Chili Cook Off are two fun events that always guarantee a good time.
On Oct. 29, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., check out the 12th annual Paws4You Howl-O-Ween day at Pinecrest Gardens. It is truly a festival of great activities with a doggie fun zone, vendors, tricks and treats, food and drinks and the ever-popular doggie costume parade and contest in the Banyan Bowl. If you have a dog, this is an event that you will not want to miss. For tickets and more information visit paws4you.org/howl-o-ween
Later that night, at 7 p.m., partygoers are invited to the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Halloween Haunted Mansion Party at the club’s historic clubhouse, 1009 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. This year’s party, featuring music by celebrity DJ Germain (of TU 94.90), great food, open bar and costume contest prizes, is a 21 years plus affair. Tickets are $100 per person with proceeds benefiting the club’s free children’s dental clinic. This is always one of the best Halloween parties in town.

Coral Gables Woman’s Club member Frances Cabrera who heads the club’s Environment Committee, rounded up a dozen or so club sisters on Sept. 17 to collect garbage around the Gables with gloves, garbage bags and pickers provided by the City of Coral Gables. In two hours they had collected 72 pounds of trash. Among the volunteers were Margaret Romero, Kim Davison, Ruth Martinez, Henryka Manes, Theresa Gilmore and Ruth Martinez.
That same Saturday, Coral Gables Rotary Club past president Greg Martini participated in another collection of garbage with club past presidents Yoli Woodbridge and Sally Baumgartner as well as others as part of the International Coastal Cleanup Day. Kudos to all for helping keep South Florida beautiful.
Finally, on Sept. 27, the Rotary Club of Coral Gables and Coral Gables Woman’s Club conduted another joint fundraiser hosted by Bay 13 in Coral Gables. Despite the low turnout because of weather, thanks to sponsor South State Bank, the event still made over $800. Next up for CGWC is the Oct. 11 Gringo Bingo hosted by Clutch Burger. These people are busy helping so many charitable projects.
Until next time, keep making each day count and share an act of kindness every day.
