Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
|
Monday night showcased the matchup of two of the most coveted rookies from this year’s draft, Paolo Banchero and Jabari Smith Jr. It wasn’t that long ago in which both of these players could’ve ended up in each other’s shoes, as the Magic had their eyes on Smith Jr. before pivoting in a different direction. The Orlando Magic were looking to get back on track and add to their win column after such a disappointing loss to the Kings. However, the Houston Rockets had spoiled that aspiration while snapping their six game losing skid.
High Octane Offense
When it came to the offense for both squads, it came with such ease dropping buckets as they shot over the fifty percent mark respectively. The Rockets had five different players scoring double digits, with Jalen Green scoring 34 points. The Magic had a total of six players in double digits, with none other than Banchero leading the pack. What truly stands out is the fact that the Rockets, as a cohesive unit, were able to shoot a remarkable fifty percent from three while taking 48 shots from deep. The final score further illustrates their offensive prowess, 134-127, with the Rockets squeezing this one out.
Cruise Control
It goes without saying that the Rockets essentially cruised their way to victory in this matchup. The Magic only had the lead for a total of five times, leading for only five minutes. As for the opposition, they amassed a 17 point lead at one point in the fourth, maintaining their lead for a total of forty minutes throughout the game.
False Hope
When it came time for the fourth quarter, the Magic had already found themselves in a hole, as they were down 100-88. Terrence Ross and Mo Bamba provided a sense of urgency, combining for 35 points off the bench, giving the Magic the much needed response to the Rockets high octane offense. Bamba made sure to capitalize on the playing time that was given, considering he did not see the floor last time out. During the fourth quarter, they allowed for the Rockets to increase their lead after squandering it to as little as a one possession game. Ultimately, despite their numerous efforts their turnovers, combined with the many missed opportunities, ended up haunting them.
Rookie Matchup
For their first matchup of their pro careers, Banchero clearly outplayed Smith Jr in the stat sheet. Banchero ended the night with a total of 30 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, while the other rookie notched himself with 3 points, 1 assist, and 1 rebound. Although the Magic rookie had the far superior stats, it was Smith Jr. and his team that took the win.
What’s Next?
The Orlando Magic (2-9) will continue on their 7 game homestead and face off against Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks (6-3). Currently, Doncic is averaging a near triple double with 36ppg, 8.8 rpg, and 8.6 apt. As for the Mavericks, they are averaging 115.1ppg while giving up 109. The Magic will have a tall task in containing Luka Doncic, potential front runner for MVP this season.
