Alzheimer’s Walk and Thanksgiving week events fill calendar

Time to give thanks for our many blessings and Thanksgiving week began with the Alzheimer’s luncheon on the Friday before with some amazing panelists sharing information and insights to hundreds of care givers and guests, presented by United Homecare at the Intercontinental Doral. Kudos to United Homecare’s CEO Carlos Martinez and his staff for putting together a remarkable program before the Walk to End Alzheimer’s the very next day at FIU’s football stadium. Thousands were on hand there including major fundraisers like David Lawrence and teams that included my own Rotary Club of Coral Gables. Yolanda Woodbridge and granddaughter Madison, Greg Martini, Steven Caine, Sally Baumgartner, Nicolas Eterovic, Carol and Jasper Brock, Arturo Mancilla, and Frank Sexton were all there.

Members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club were also there having shared proceeds from their last Gringo Bingo with the Coral Gables Rotary Team whose donations were matched by the Rotary Club’s Foundation to bring in $4,500.

Of course, Thanksgiving Day is always a great day for several Coral Gables Rotarians who gather every year at Chapman Partnership to serve Thanksgiving meals. Kudos to all those Rotarians and so many other volunteers who spend their time in service to others. Truly, South Florida is a giving community like few others.

Speaking of which, members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club prepared 30 food baskets with gift certificates for a turkey to the families whose children are served by the club’s free children’s dental clinic, collected and packaged toiletries for Miami Rescue Mission’s hygiene project and collected $20 gift cards for Santa to hand out as children pose for photos with him at the club’s annual dental clinic holiday party. To help raise additional funds for these holiday programs, partial proceeds from the Club’s Game Night fundraiser at Bay 13 with the Rotary Club of Coral Gables helped fill the gap to make sure every child was covered. It was great to see new CGWC members Melissa Castro and Alex Guillen at the event along with Rotarian Greg Martini, Lina Pinzon, and Andy Bilbao.

As for other December events leading up to Chanukah, Christmas, and Kwanza, look for Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger on Giralda Avenue on December 6, 7 – 9 p.m. with the always popular bingo caller Steven Bradley and music by Dr. Nure Khoury to make it a party. Proceeds from this December Gringo Bingo will be shared with the American Diabetes Association’s Jingle Bell Run to be held on December 17, at Tropical Park. This morning event always brings out the most creative festive attire and lots of laughs with Santa on hand for photo ops as well.

Look for the Paws4You Gala, always an absolute wonderful event, at the Marriott Brickell on December 10 as well as the Villagers Historic House Tour earlier that same day!

Until next time, keep making each day count and keep sharing acts of kindness.
