The Town of Cutler Bay will host a Workshop on Human Trafficking for Seniors on Jan. 19, co-sponsored by the town, Miami-Dade County District 8 Commissioner Danielle Cohen-Higgins, and the Cutler Ridge Woman’s Club. Everyone is invited to attend.
The workshop will take place in the Cutler Bay Town Hall, 10720 Caribbean Blvd., from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Guests are invited to come early at 6 p.m. when they can meet the hosts.
Victor Williams, president of Quest2Freedom, will be a part of the meeting. Williams also is vice chair of the Miami-Dade County Human Trafficking Coalition, a public speaker and awareness training lecturer.
Though now retired, Williams served as a special agent of the Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and is a respected figure in law enforcement with more than 34 years of domestic and international experience. He had joined the U.S. Customs Service in 1991, which later became the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In 2011, Williams was assigned to the Office of the Special Agent in Charge, Miami Florida Human Trafficking Group, and in 2012 became the coordinator for the South Florida Human Trafficking Task Force (SFHTTF) until his retirement in 2018.
Jean Tong-Noon, president of the Cutler Ridge Woman’s Club (CRWC) is pleased with the support from the county and the town.
“The GFWC Cutler Ridge Woman’s Club has been trying to hold a workshop to educate our communities on elderly trafficking and how it is being done,” Tong-Noon said. “When people hear ‘elderly’ they only think of abuse, but in fact there are so many ways they can be trafficked. The last workshop that we held was back in 2016. It was attended by 150 persons and we hope we can draw the same.”
Williams knows only too well the importance of the topic.
“Whether it’s telemarketing fraud or benefits fraud, where the elderly are being exploited for their Social Security checks, this is an area that needs to be seriously looked into,” Williams said. “State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle is investigating these cases.”
