Longtime resident, community activist, and Downtown Neighbors Alliance (DNA) President, James Torres, launched his candidacy to fill the Miami City Commission’s vacancy in District 2 left by the resignation of former Commissioner Ken Russell. As mandated by the City’s Municipal Charter, on January 8th, the Miami City Commission voted unanimously to hold a special election on Monday, February 27, 2023, to fill the presently vacant commission seat.
“The City of Miami is one of the most globally iconic and diverse cities in the United States. Its rich historical sites, buildings, parks, and beautiful and delicate coastline make it one of the most desirable places to live, work and raise a family. However, our city faces a myriad of significant and urgent challenges that adversely affect our quality of life, including the affordability crisis, the modernization of our aging infrastructure, our ever-present transit issues, chronic homelessness, and addressing the constant flooding of our neighborhoods due to the effects of climate change and sea level rise.” – Declared Mr. Torres.
“The residents of the City of Miami are anxious for their leaders to tackle these critical issues. I look forward to rolling-up my sleeves and committing my extensive experience in the private and public sector to improving the lives of our residents.” – Added Mr. Torres.
James Torres has proudly made Miami Commission District 2 his home for the past decade. James is a consensus builder and issue-driven leader with a long track record of delivering results on behalf of city residents. He serves as the president of the prestigious citywide Downtown Neighbors Alliance (DNA) community organization. The DNA represents around 30,000 residents within Central Business District and the Park West Neighborhoods. The Alliance has been improving the quality of life, the common good, and the general welfare of residents and businesses since 2013. Before serving as DNA’s president, James Torres served as president of the Board of Directors at the Viscayne Condominiums.
Mr. Torres serves as Director of Business Management for Hotwire Communications. He has a background in banking, strategic media sales, and business development, as well as being the father of four children – a title and responsibility he relishes the most.
Miami Commission District 2 includes Coconut Grove, Brickell, Downtown, Edgewater, and Morningside.
