The Village of Palmetto Bay Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Jan. 9, among other topics, sought to clear up a “heated discussion” during the December council meeting regarding the planned Veterans Park.
Mayor Karyn Cunningham explained in an email sent to residents:
“The language read into the record by one of our councilmembers was, apparently, from what was termed the ‘First Turnover Agreement,’” Mayor Cunningham said. “On Feb. 5, 2022, the village approved the ‘Second Turnover Agreement.’”
In the Second Turnover Agreement the village is permitted to use property acquired from South Motor Company of Dade County granted to the village for use as a veterans park to honor military veterans before the actual purchase takes place. South Motors, which is located at 16165 S. Dixie Hwy., will deed the property over to the Village of Palmetto Bay for the amount of $1.
The parcel of land, currently vacant, is located to the east of South Motors Service Department building on SW 164th Street near 93rd Avenue, and is roughly three blocks west of American Legion Post 133.
“I am excited about the acquisition of new park space,” Mayor Cunningham said. “After all, we are the Village of Parks. Our Veterans Committee is also excited to see this finally come to fruition. Facts are important and we will be providing further updates as they are available.”
Village manager Nick Marano has been authorized to proceed with the acquisition since the resolution regarding the Second Turnover Agreement was approved in a 4 to 1 vote by the council. Councilmember Marsha Matson cast the only “no” vote.
In other business, among the resolutions passed in the Jan. 9 meeting were the following items:
● Resolution approving basketball court lighting improvements at Palmetto Bay Park.
● Resolution approving the 2023 Legislative Agenda.
● Resolution approving traffic calming devices.
● Resolution approving the CRS Plan.
● Resolution directing the manager to begin coordinating with the county to acquire property located at SW 77th Avenue and 140th Drive.
It also was announced that the village closed Fiscal Year 2022 with a General Fund Surplus of $5,522,239.
