Positive influences significantly impact all of us, and the Pinecrest Police Explorer program understands this well. Since 1973, the Police Explorer program has allowed young adults across the United States to explore the facets of our criminal justice system. This nationwide program develops self-discipline, teamwork, responsibility, and character in every cadet.
In Pinecrest, Explorers experience firsthand what it’s like to be a Pinecrest Police Officer through those already answering the call. The Police Explorer program is an impactful community policing initiative that builds ties between the youth and the police. The Pinecrest Police Department understands the value such a transformative program has on the community, and its commitment is unwavering.
For nearly two decades, Pinecrest Explorers have safely received hands-on police experience. During this time, 61 cadets have participated and almost all have moved on to professional careers in law enforcement, medicine, education and business. We currently have two motivated post advisors who carefully administer the Pinecrest Explorers of Post 115: Officer Andres Garcia and Officer Darren Jones.
“Exploring is a great way to gain an insider perspective on law enforcement,” says Officer Garcia, a former Pinecrest Explorer.
Sergeant Myra Oliva, a former School Resource Officer, who served as a post advisor for several years, now manages the program. In addition to weekly meetings, Explorers participate in the ride-along program and classroom instruction about the criminal justice system, values, ethics and leadership, to name a few.
“Being a Pinecrest Explorer has taught me to stay true to myself, always to work hard, and give 100 percent effort in whatever I do,” says Cadet Eric Viener, 18.
A physical component of the Explorer program, like a police academy, involves marching, calisthenics, and running. Explorers also earn community service hours between classes and training when they assist the police with community events. The structured program emphasizes self-discipline, character, and community service.
Police Explorers, like law enforcement, have historically maintained a paramilitary structure rich in tradition. As a result, our Explorers are taught and expected to think critically in this structured environment. This opportunity has brought significant change for many and even launched new careers.
When asked about the Explorer program, Cadet Gavin Linton, 14, said it was “fun, a great experience, useful for now and later in life.”
