Los Trompos, the vibrant, world-renowned outdoor art exhibition created by Mexican designers Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena, has been installed at Shops at Merrick Park in Coral Gables. The pop-up exhibit is making its South Florida debut through Feb. 28.
Eight unique modules weighing between 700 and 1,100 pounds, topped by colorful surfaces of stretched fabric woven in a traditional Mexican style, have been installed. Functioning as both artwork and a rotating platform, each larger-than-life, three-dimensional colorful sculpture acts as an engaging gathering place for relaxation, social interaction and entertainment. The art draws its inspiration from a toy that has been popular with children around the world since the dawn of time.
Los Trompos, which means “spinning tops” in Spanish, is a traveling exhibit that has been displayed in cities around the world, including Mexico City, Paris, and New York.
Los Trompos was first commissioned by High Museum of Arts, Atlanta. Owners of Los Trompos are DTE Energy Beacon Park Foundation and The Downtown Detroit Partnership.
The tour producer is Creos.
Shops at Merrick Park is located at 358 San Lorenzo Ave., Coral Gables, FL 33146. For more information about Shops at Merrick Park, call 305-529-1215 or visit www.shopsatmerrickpark.com.
