Ukrainian children who have recently made Miami their home came together to decorate sugar cookies at Vizcaya Village on Saturday, Feb. 4, in honor of their home country this Valentine’s season.
The initiative, hosted by Seeds of Hope at Barry University, Vizcaya, and Dade Heritage Trust, sought to serve this displaced community and provide some relief during these trying times.
Seeds of Hope is a student-run initiative of the School of Education, Leadership and Human Development at Barry University.
“We provide social, emotional and educational support to Ukrainian children as they grapple with the reality of having fled their war-torn country — many leaving their families behind,” said Ekaterina Elagina, Seeds of Hope program director.
Since April, more than 85,000 Ukrainians have sought refuge across the United States.
Approximately 11,500 Americans have signed up to sponsor Ukrainians arriving in Florida.
“Historically, Vizcaya has served as a place of respite. Now, as a public museum, this is one of the many ways we aim to serve our community, by being a safe and welcoming place where people can come to enjoy the arts, nature, and local history. This partnership was a beautiful blend of all these elements,” said Rebecca Peterson, Community Programs manager.
Baking in Historic Places is a series presented by Dade Heritage Trust (DHT), Miami-Dade County’s largest preservation organization, where the nonprofit uses local kitchens in Miami’s most beautiful historic venues to create delicious baked treats under the guidance of DHT’s baker-in-chief, Lucia Meneses.
“Our Baking in Historic Places events provide the opportunity to unite the community in a fun and creative way, learning about the culture and history of the places we visit,” said Christine Rupp, executive director of Dade Heritage Trust. Previous events have taken place at The Scottish Rite Temple, Fruit & Spice Park, Montgomery Botanical Center, the Historic Hampton House, and more.
“In light of the Valentine’s season, and the first anniversary of the horrific invasion of Ukraine, it was a privilege to spend time with these children and provide joy and a sense of community any way we can. We hope this is an example to other nonprofits looking for ways to assist these children in developing a better understanding of their new South Florida home,” Rupp added.
