On February 24, 2023, Spelman College President Dr. Helene Gayle visited Turner Tech High in District 2 and participated at the Social & Economic Institute, sponsored by the Honorable School Board Member Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall. During this visit, Dr. Bendross-Mindingall presented Dr. Gayle with a proclamation in recognition of her remarkable career in public health and education.
Dr. Helene Gayle holds degrees in pediatrics and public health. Her work in public health has landed her on the lists of the world’s most powerful women. For almost a decade, Dr. Helene Gayle was president and CEO of CARE, a leading international humanitarian organization. A public health physician with expertise in economic development, humanitarian, and health issues, she spent 20 years with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, working primarily on HIV/AIDS. She worked at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, directing programs on HIV/AIDS and other global health issues.
Dr. Helene Gayle began serving as the 11th president of Spelman College on July 1, 2022. Before joining Spelman, from October 2017 through June 2022, Dr. Gayle was CEO of the Chicago Community Trust, one of the nation’s oldest and largest community foundations. Under her leadership, the Trust adopted a new strategic focus on closing the racial and ethnic wealth gap in the Chicago region
A recipient of numerous awards, Dr. Helene Gayle has authored articles on global and domestic public health issues, poverty alleviation, gender equality, and wealth inequity. She has received 18 honorary degrees and holds faculty appointments at the University of Washington and Emory University.
