The Village of Palmetto Bay will host its second annual Spring Recycling Drive-Thru on Saturday, Apr. 29.

Residents are invited to plan ahead to bring special recyclable items to the Drive-Thru event that are not collected by regular county recycling trucks.

The event will take place from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m. at the Village Hall Municipal Center, located at 9705 E. Hibiscus St. In Palmetto Bay. Vendors will be on hand to safely dispose of household hazardous waste, shred and recycle sensitive documents, recycle electronics such as old laptops and other items, and accept gently used clothing for donation to charity.

Andrea Candelaria, Resilience Coordinator for the village’s Community & Economic Development Department, is looking forward to the return of the event.

“The village is very excited to host its second Spring Recycling Drive-Thru, especially given the success we had last year,” Candelaria said. “That event safely transported and stored over 1,000 pounds of paint and over 150 pounds of aerosols, recycled over 400 pounds of electronics equipment, recycled over 89 pounds of light bulbs, recycled over 150 pounds of batteries, recycled over 6,000 pounds of paper and two dozen bags of gently used clothing were donated to our neighborhood non-profit.”

Candelaria said that even old car batteries will be accepted by the vendors servicing the event but they must be fully drained of liquid and completely sealed. She also said that staff will be on hand to help remove the items during the drive through.

“Last year, most customers wanted to take their own items from their cars to ensure a safe disposal, especially the paper shredding. However, vendors have the intention to make it easier for customers and take the material from them in order to provide a more relaxed process. Residents can pop the trunk of their cars and we will take it from there.”

Candelaria said that the drive-through event is free for village residents and businesses, and explained how the process would work.

“For example, the paper shredding company will be shredding paper on site and transporting the paper to be recycled themselves, the hazardous waste vendor will be transporting the material for safe storage, the electronics vendors will be wiping hard drives and recycling electronics, and the donated clothes will be received by Club Fellowship representatives that will be on-site.”

She indicated that sponsors for the event are welcome and anyone interested should contact her at 305-259-1238 or by email at acandelaria@palmettobay-fl.gov.
