April is Autism Acceptance Month, previously named Autism Awareness Month. Autism Acceptance Month emphasizes the need for public awareness to promote acceptance, celebrate the differences, and be more inclusive towards autistic individuals around us.
West Park joins in the effort to promote autism awareness, inclusion and self-determination for all, and assures that each resident with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is provided the opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a group of neurodevelopment disorders that affect how people communicate, learn, behave, and socially interact. People may have repetitive and characteristic patterns of behavior or narrow interests. Not everyone who has ASD may have these symptoms, which are usually present from early childhood and affect daily functioning. Both children and adults can have ASD.
The term “spectrum” refers to the wide range of symptoms, skills, and levels of disability in functioning that can occur in people with ASD. Some children and adults with ASD are fully able to perform all activities of daily living while others require substantial support to perform basic activities. Learning and thinking can range from extremely gifted to needing severe help.
ASD occurs in every racial and ethnic group, and across all socioeconomic levels.
This April, I am again encouraging all West Park residents to accept and appreciate. The Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon is the most recognized symbol of the autism community. Show your support for residents with autism and their families by wearing the Autism Acceptance Puzzle Ribbon this entire month. We want to ensure acceptance and inclusion in our city that results in true appreciation of the unique aspects of all people. We want to get one step closer to a society where those with autism are truly valued for their unique talents and gifts. Let’s do this!
