Miami-Dade’s Westchester neighborhood has always been known for its vibrant community and its commitment to the well-being of its residents. One of the organizations that have contributed significantly to this is FitKids of America, which has been operating in the heart of Westchester for 32 years.

Co-directed by Connie Sootin and Rhonda Smith, FitKids offers much more than what their mission statement suggests. Besides their commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, mental, academic and physical fitness among children, they have been helping homeless families, poor students, and schools in the area.

Their programs cater to pre-K, first and second-grade students, after-school programs, and summer programs. However, what sets FitKids apart from other similar programs is its overwhelming popularity. While others struggle with low enrollments, FitKids has a waiting list of eager parents who want their children to be part of the program.

It is evident that the organization has had a profound impact on their children’s lives.  Some parents were students here themselves.  Besides the beauty and details of the place, children feel loved and engaged every day they attend.

Beyond just physical activity, FitKids has also become a second home for many of the children in the program. “My daughter feels so comfortable here, and she’s made so many friends. I’m just grateful for what they do,” says  Maria Lopez, a mom whose daughter is in the after-school program.

Sootin and Smith’s dedication to the community has not gone unnoticed, and they have received recognition and awards from local organizations. However, for them, the most rewarding aspect of their work is seeing the positive impact it has on the children they serve.  So many have gone on to successful careers—and even fame!

FitKids of America is undoubtedly a gem in Miami-Dade’s Westchester neighborhood. It is a testament to the power of a committed community and the impact it can have on its residents, especially its youngest members.
