Provident Healthcare is orchestrating a health scavenger hunt on Apr. 1, with lots of great prizes, to both educate and support a great cause, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s “Free” Children’s Dental Clinic.
The Hunt, “Scour the City”, begins at 11 a.m. and continues through 4 p.m. Pick up maps at TrueTan, 385 Alhambra, Suite B, and follow the directions from there. Sponsor dollars will be directed to this great community resource that provides children of the working poor from all over the county with free dental care.
CGWC’s members, who come from as far away as Miramar and Kendall to Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay and Doral, are not only helping with this event but also planning its monthly Gringo Bingo fundraiser set for Apr. 4, 7-9 p.m., at Clutch Burger with Steven Bradley as emcee and DJ Germain once again providing music for this “party like” bingo game with lots of prizes and all for charity. For more information on the hunt, visit www.CoralandGablesWellnessHunt.com. To RSVP for Gringo Bingo, email gloria@cnews.net.
Mother’s Day is coming up on May 14, and you can start celebrating on May 13 with CGWC’s Centennial Mother’s Day Tea. This fourth annual tea is always a lavish affair that you will not want to miss. Event chair Rita Tennyson promises a spectacular afternoon of food, entertainment and bubbly with an opportunity to shop for that perfect gift for mom.
This is a perfect way to celebrate with your daughters, moms, friends and family and all for a great cause.
Tickets are $125 for adults and may be purchased on Eventbrite. To reserve, go to www.eventbrite.com/e/590175680347.
Speaking of service clubs, the General Federation of Women’s Club’s (GFWC) newest club in our South Florida District 11, the Woman’s Club of Historic Overtown Village, hosted its first district meeting at its new home, the Historic Black Precinct Courthouse and Museum, on Mar. 11. District 11 director Virginia Yermoli and Overtown Club president Lavette Moore welcomed everyone during a social time when a raffle helped raised almost $200 for the GFWC President Project, Camp Boggy Creek.
After enjoying some tasty goodies, like some members’ famous sweet potato pie and more, the members of several clubs attending, convened in the upstairs courtroom where they were treated to a talk by museum director Terrance Cribbs-L’orrant. After a great historical perspective, Cribbs-L’orrant presented an award to Carolyn Taylor-Pate, who became the first Black police and fire dispatcher for the City of Miami Police in February 1966.
Special presentations also were made to other inspiring Black women in the community including Stephanie van Vark, founder of Stephanie Crates; Karen Cartwright, community advocate; Anita Najiy, who was first female assistant chief of the City of Miami Police Department.
Finally, kudos to Mary Snow and the Coral Gables Community Foundation for yet another stellar event, “Moon Over Coral Gables,” spanning several weekends at Fred B. Hartnett Ponce Circle Park. Every day brought a different theme but all great, from St. Patrick’s Day, Howl at the Moon with your dogs, to a PJ party with Books and Books.
Until next time, share your talents and make a difference and be kind.
