The organizations celebrated National Poetry Month by placing the words of Little Havana resident and Florida International University graduate, Luz Rossy, on a Downtown Miami billboard during April.
The [ Your poem here ] campaign re-imagines Downtown Miami’s skyline as a canvas for poetry.
The project consists of broadcasting a single Zip Ode — a unique poetic form invented by both organizations where one’s zip code dictates the number of words to a poem’s line — on a monumental billboard across from the Miami-Dade Arena. The central theme for the Zip Ode prompt is to inspire lyrical responses from local residents across neighborhoods in Miami Dade County and South Florida, to celebrate their place in the world and their unique notion of home.
In mid-March, the billboard for the campaign was unveiled with the words [ Your poem here ], inviting people from South Florida to submit their Zip Odes to yourpoemhere.com by Mar. 22. After receiving over 1,500 submissions, Luz Rossy was selected as the winning poet.
“You don’t know how much this means to me.” said Luz Rossy, winner of the 2023 [ Your poem here ] campaign. Her poem is an homage to her grandmothers, who both happen to be named Luz.
Luz is a Library Page for the Westchester Regional Library, a branch of Miami-Dade Public Library System. As part of the campaign, Luz was to be interviewed by WLRN about the experience.
Her Zip Ode is a celebration of home. A celebration of her abuelas. O, Miami and WLRN selected the poem for the way it foregrounds lineage, family, and human connection.
“The best Zip Odes tell a story about home. We loved Luz’s poem because we could see the love she has for her corner of the world and how the importance of family shapes so much of our lives,” said Melissa Gomez, communications director, O, Miami.
“WLRN is so very proud to be a part of this celebration of storytellers in South Florida,” said Sergio Bustos, WLRN’s vice president for news. “Telling stories of our community is part of our grand mission at WLRN.”
While the [ Your poem here ] campaign is now closed, O, Miami and WLRN are continuing to accept Zip Odes throughout the month of April. Each week 10 poems will be spotlighted and those poets will be invited to participate during the Zip Odes finale at Vizcaya Late, on Apr. 26, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event is co-presented by O, Miami and WLRN in partnership with Vizcaya Museum & Gardens.
The evening will be a celebration of the return of in-person Zip Odes. To round out the festivities, O, Miami, and the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center will award the 2023 Marjory Stoneman Douglas Poetry Award.
