April has been a very busy month for service organizations from beginning to end.
Closing out March, South Florida PBS hosted an amazing Women’s Health Fair on Mar. 25 that had programs geared for women of all ages with some phenomenal speakers and interactive programs throughout the day from making a health quinoa salad and a yoga class, and lectures and a SEX Talk program with Dr. Lia. South Florida PBS plans to make this an annual event that you will want to look for next year.
Another first-time event took place a week later on Apr. 1. Fun seekers joined a pilot event sponsored by Provident Health Care Services. The event, a Coral Gables Scavenger Hunt, was coordinated by Coral Gables Woman’s Club new member Viviana Laboy as a trial run that promises to expand in the future. Proceeds will help support the CGWC Free Children’s Dental Clinic that treats children from all over the county who fall between the cracks in our healthcare system.
In other news, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority held Groovin’ in the Gables Scholarship Brunch for the Pearls of Hope Foundation Inc. on Apr. 16, at the historic Coral Gables Woman’s Clubhouse. The proceeds benefited the foundation’s scholarship and mentorship programs.
The affair, chaired by Rochelle Adger with Kristina Jackson as her co-chair, featured the internationally acclaimed Red House Duo playing the best in jazz, R&B and neo soul. While enjoying the sounds of Red House, guests dined on exquisitely prepared foods and a variety of beverages sponsored by E11EVEN Vodka and Total Wines & More. At last count, the affair raised approximately $10,000 with donations still coming in.
I was delighted to have both Adger and Jackson as well as Pearls of Hope Foundation chair Ann Pope as my guests on Gloria’s Gab LIVE to talk about the event and their mission. The show may be found at https://communitynewspapers.com/videos-2/glorias-gab-host-gloria-burns-welcomes-kristina-jackson-rochelle-adger-and-ann-pope/.
Yet another concert, also at the CGWC Clubhouse, was held on Apr. 20. Chairing that event was Carol Horkowitz, arts chair for the Coral Gables Woman’s Club. Guests enjoyed a lovely evening of music performed by the Frost School of Music’s Jason Charos Jazz Quartet. Proceeds from this mini fundraiser were directed Camp Boggy Creek and other outreach programs.
Don’t forget to reserve your spot for Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) Centennial Mother’s Day Tea on Saturday, May 13, 1-4 p.m., an affair you will not want to miss. Event chair Rita Tennyson promises a spectacular afternoon of food, entertainment, and bubbly with an opportunity to shop for that perfect gift for mom. Come celebrate with your daughters, moms, friends, and family and all for a great cause, Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Children’s Dental Clinic, that provides free dental services to children of the working poor. Tickets are $125 for adults and may be purchased on Eventbrite. To reserve, go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/590175680347.
Finally, Rotary Club of Coral Gables members and guests gathered at the offices of Community Newspapers for a party celebrating the Fifth Friday in March. Past RRCG president Sally Baumgartner coordinates this event whenever there are five Fridays in a month and members take turns providing the venue. Thirty or more people enjoyed the evening and had a chance to meet publisher Michael Miller, tour the offices and video production studios.
Among the many attending were RCCG past presidents Carlos Bolado with wife Terri, Nicolas Eterovic, David Mitchell, Greg Martini Yolanda Woodbridge, and Walter Alvarez. Among others were RCCG treasurer Bill Quesenberry with fiancée Chie Hoban, Aaron Glasser with Leslie, Lina Pinzon and mother Gloria, Larry Goodman, Henryka Manes, and Elisabetta Bell.
By the way, Gables Rotarians join forces with the Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) every fourth Tuesday for a game night mixer, 7-9 p.m., at Bay 13 across from the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. Tickets are $20 per person and include one drink. The first Tuesday of every month, its Gringo Bingo time at Clutch Burger from 7 to 9 p.m. To RSVP for either event, send email to gloria@cnews.net.
Until next time, share your talents, count your blessings and not your challenges, and make a difference.
