Joining forces is a great way many service organizations to make a larger impact. Coming up soon, the GFWC Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) is collaborating with sister club, the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove, to present an interactive Self-Defense Seminar for Women at its clubhouse, 1001 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd., on May 17, at 6:30 p.m. The event will include education on human trafficking and club member Sensei Carol White will be teaching this self-defense class for women in person and on Zoom.
Carol White owns White Tiger & Dragon Martial Arts and has taught self-defense for decades to thousands in South Florida.
The Seminar cost $40. The human trafficking guest speaker, Shanika Ampah, is a human trafficking survivor who now helps significant numbers of survivors. It should be an impactful program. All proceeds raised from our event will be donated to benefit Guiding Light Outreach Inc, a nonprofit organization that serves the human trafficking survivor community by addressing social issues and traumatic events.
Women’s month should be every month if their positive impact is any indication. In just the past several weeks fundraising efforts supporting numerous charitable programs have been nonstop. In fact, several South Florida women’s clubs recently returned from the annual state convention of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs held at the Rosen Plaza in Orlando and then tackled countless other projects.
During the convention, clubs from all over the state brought in hand crocheted Afghans as well as curtains and teddy bears for Camp Boggy Creek, where life-changing experiences are provided at no cost to children with serious health illnesses. Camp Boggy Creek is the GFWC Florida president Linda O’Toole’s project for her term.
In other news, to fund the Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s (CGWC) free children dental clinic, the club will hold its annual Mother’s Day Tea on Saturday, May 13, 1-4 p.m., with a Bridgerton theme that will make for a fun, lavish event at $125 per person. The affair will be held at the CGWC historic clubhouse at 1001-1009 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables. Tickets may be purchased through Eventbrite.
CGWC’s clubhouse was offered at cost in another collaborative effort the club has with the Kappa Alpha Kappa Sorority’s whose brunch on Apr. 16, raised approximately $10,000 for scholarships. Kudos to event chair Rochelle Adger and her co-chair and CGWC Civic Engagement chair Kristina Jackson for a great event featuring the internationally acclaimed Red House Duo playing the best jazz, R&B and neo soul.
Yet another concert was held Apr. 20, also at the CGWC’s clubhouse to benefit Camp Boggy Creek, chaired by Carol Horkowitz. The evening featured the Frost School of Music’s Charos Quartet, whom the guests enjoyed immensely.
Calling all golfers! Save the date, Friday, May 19, for the sixth annual Tee Off for a Cause Golf Tournament. Sign up for an exciting day at Trump National Doral Resorts Red Tiger Golf Course. For those not familiar with ASHFN, it was founded 22 years ago by Nick Silverio who works 24/7 at no salary to help mothers and expectant mothers in crisis. Most recently, they welcomed the 371st baby that was lawfully left in the arms of caring firefighters.
Finally, in more collaborations, Gables Rotarians join forces with the Coral Gables Woman’s Club every fourth Tuesday for a game night mixer, 7-9 p.m., at Bay 13, across from the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables, to play Trivia and have fun with proceeds benefitting each club’s charities. All are invited. It’s only $20 and Bay 13 includes a comp beer or house wine. To RSVP, email gloria@cnews.net. Walk ups are welcomed.
