Raising Awareness of World IBD Day

It's Time for Marlins Baseball
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

This baseball season is off to a great start! Fans are loving the new MLB rules and the Marlins are playing some exciting baseball.

In addition to the action on the field, May is a special month for me, my wife Cynthia and my family and our philanthropy, The Bruce and Cynthia Sherman Charitable Foundation. We personally recognize the accomplishments of individuals who fight to overcome Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The disease has impacted our family and continues to cause suffering for numerous other families. Crohn’s is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that targets a patient’s digestive tract and affects nearly 3 million people in the world.

World IBD Day is May 19, a time to address the fact there is currently no cure for these diseases. Patients endure endless doctor visits, drug protocols, surgeries and hospitalizations, and drastic lifestyle changes. Spreading awareness of these diseases is our mission. That’s why we were fortunate to highlight the incredible work of Dr. Maria Abreu with the University of Miami Health System. As a Sherman Prize recipient and the chair of our 2023 selection committee, she threw out the ceremonial first pitch for IBD Awareness Day at the Marlins game on May 17.

Each year, we award two Sherman Prizes, recognizing the extraordinary track records of achievement and accomplishments of medical leaders who work toward the whole patient experience such as clinicians, surgeons, researchers, and academia. Sherman Prize recipients are visionaries driven to solve IBD’s most difficult challenges whose pioneering contributions inspires future innovators and transform IBD care, taking into consideration serious symptoms as well as the psychological and practical components of IBD. Additionally, a Sherman Emerging Leader Prize is awarded to an IBD professional who, while early in his or her career, has contributed to an advancement in his or her discipline and shows great promise for significant contributions in the future. Emerging Leader Prize recipients seek out new roles, challenge the status quo, and pursue experiences that test their leadership skills and support their future aspirations. Our hope is that future recipients continue this tradition of excellence, including all patients in their work, especially those who cannot afford or access quality care.

We’ve made this philanthropy a family affair, family funded, and family created. Now in its eighth year, the Sherman Prize will reward those in the medical field who provide outstanding and responsive clinical care and make strides to improve the physical, emotional and/or psychosocial aspects of treatment.

The Bruce and Cynthia Sherman Charitable Foundation is one of our proudest accomplishments with hopes to continually help support medical leaders and change the lives of patients and those who will one day be diagnosed.

Let’s strike out Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis!
