In the first few weeks of May, charitable events started at a rapid pace bringing funds to support worthy nonprofits. In fact, one of the biggest fundraisers was held on May 8 at La Gorce Country Club for the Voices for Children Foundation and its Guardian Ad Litem program.
Board member Brad Meltzer orchestrated a golf tournament that raised $330,000, thanks to generous sponsors and donors who got to play on that beautiful course while enjoying great food and an open bar.
Adding to the fun that day was the announcement that Blake Murphy of Coastal Construction won a Cadillac for making a “Hole-In-One.” For this writer, it was the first time to ever experience a tournament in which that lucky shot was made.
The event also gave Voices for Children Foundation’s president and CEO, Kadie Black, and the foundation’s board chair, Kira Grossman, an opportunity to thank the many sponsors, talk about the programs and accept a the check from the event proceeds.
Another fundraiser, titled “Kudos for Kids,” was spearheaded by Coral Gables Rotary past president Yolanda Woodbridge who recently was inducted into the RI District 6990 Hall of Fame. Never one to rest on her laurels, Yoli garnered amazing support for this event created to benefit the club’s International Committee outreach programs.
Guests enjoyed a buffet and open bar, plus live music from the Frost School of Music in the spacious patio backyard gardens often used for weddings in the Coconut Grove neighborhood, a location that was donated for the event.
International Committee chair Henryka Manes was delighted by the incredible in-kind donations and sponsor dollars, the largest of which came from Fred Baddour, RCCG president Ana Fournaris, and Carol and Jasper Brock. With a promised matching grant, this little soiree may bring in as much as $16,000-plus for the club’s outreach efforts in Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti and Colombia.
The Coral Gables Bar/Rotary held its monthly mixer on May 10 at Season’s 52, sponsored by FICPA and attended by FICPA’s regional director, Katheryn Hernandez. These mixers are mini fundraisers for both the Gables Bar and Rotary and are held in different locations every second Wednesday of the month. The event is complimentary for judges, $15 for members and $20 for others.
On Friday, May 19, A Safe Haven for Newborns held its annual golf tournament at Trump National Resort. More on that in next issue but, suffice to say, proceeds help ASFN support its work that has, to date, saved 371 babies from abandonment and possible death.
Finally, May 19, also was opening night at Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre for David Auburn’s Proof playing through June 4. Actors’ artistic director David Arisco noted this is considered the best play written in 25 years and is a must see. Performances will take place at the Miracle Theatre, Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Ticket prices range from $40 to $125 and can be purchased by calling 305-444-9293 or by visiting www.actorsplayhouse.org.
Until next time, share your talents, count your blessings and not your challenges, and make a difference.
