Environmental conservation starts in your own backyard
(José C. Romano MUG)

I live in Kendall and I love it here. Mostly known for Dadeland, Town and Country, Miami Dade College and The Falls, no one really considers this suburban neighborhood (and for that matter most neighborhoods in South Florida) as the “front line” of conservation.

The rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems of our region have inspired me to act and play my part in preserving the natural wonders that surround me. In this article, I will share my experiences and the steps I have taken to contribute to conservation efforts in my own backyard.

Understanding South Florida’s ecosystems
South Florida has a remarkable array of ecosystems, each teeming with life and playing a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. From the sprawling Everglades to the coastal mangroves and tropical hardwood hammocks, these diverse habitats are home to numerous plant and animal species found nowhere else in the United States. To truly appreciate the importance of conservation, it is essential to understand the uniqueness and fragility of these ecosystems.

Native plant landscaping
One of the first steps I took towards conservation in my backyard was to embrace native plant landscaping. Native plants are well-adapted to the local climate and require less water, fertilizer, and pesticides. By replacing non-native and invasive species with native ones, I have created a habitat that supports local wildlife, including birds, butterflies, and bees. Additionally, the reduced use of chemicals helps prevent pollution of nearby water bodies.

Water conservation
Water scarcity is a significant concern in South Florida, and conserving water has become an integral part of my backyard conservation efforts. Installing rain barrels to collect and store rainwater for irrigation has proven to be an effective strategy. I also have incorporated drought-tolerant plants and implemented smart irrigation systems to minimize water wastage. These small changes have not only reduced my water consumption but also contributed to the overall water conservation efforts in the region.
Protecting wildlife

My backyard has become a sanctuary for local wildlife, providing a safe haven amidst the expanding urban landscape. To safeguard the well-being of these creatures, I have installed bird feeders, nesting boxes, and bat houses to attract and support their presence.

Additionally, I have implemented measures to deter predators and prevent harm to wildlife.

Creating a harmonious coexistence with the native fauna has been an immensely rewarding experience.

Educating and inspiring others
Conservation efforts start in individual backyards but should extend to the community and the world. I am fortunate to work at a place that has undertaken the task of educating and inspiring others by providing education outreach programs and organizing conservation events for local families through our Earth Agents Program. By raising awareness about the importance of conservation and providing practical tips, I hope to encourage more people to join in and make a positive impact on our environment.

Conservation in my backyard in South Florida has been a transformative journey that has deepened my connection with nature and reinforced my responsibility as a caretaker of the environment. Through small but meaningful steps like native plant landscaping, water conservation, wildlife protection, and community outreach, I have witnessed the tangible difference that each individual can make. As we collectively strive to preserve the unique ecosystems of South Florida, let us remember that conservation begins right in our own backyards and you can still go shopping at The Falls!
