The People’s Transportation Plan is funding the future of transit in Miami-Dade. Far along in the planning, design and even construction are the six rapid transit corridors that make up the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Program.
The corridors will bring rapid transit to the far corners of Miami-Dade – Homestead, the beaches, the western suburbs and the Broward County line. A new people mover extension, rail links, Gold Standard Bus Rapid Transit with pre-paid boarding and dedicated bus lanes, modernized transit fleets, smart traffic signals and a host of bicycle/pedestrian improvements, will make public transportation even more accessible, faster and easier.
Stations for the Northeast Corridor commuter rail service have already been completed in Downtown Miami and Aventura, and stations serving the South Corridor Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service are currently under construction.
The six corridors are:
- The Beach Corridor from Downtown Miami to the Design District
and the Miami Beach Convention Center - The East-West Corridor from Downtown to Miami International
Airport, to the Dolphin and Tamiami Park-and-Ride facilities and
FIU - The Kendall Corridor along Kendall Drive to Krome Avenue
- The North Corridor from the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Metrorail station to NW 215th St. - The Northeast Corridor from Downtown Miami to Aventura
- The South Corridor from the Dadeland South Metrorail station
to Florida City
As mobility continues to improve in Miami-Dade County, the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust and its many partners are committed to working with local, state and federal governments and the community to keep moving forward.
