Educational partnership with businesses demonstrates school’s first year success
Cristo Rey Miami High School’s unique educational model combines college preparatory coursework with five days of professional corporate work experience each month.

As the 2022-23 school year ends, the business and educational community is coming together to celebrate a year of exceptional achievements and milestones as Cristo Rey Miami High School eagerly prepares to welcome a second class of students into the school family for the 2023-24 school year.

Cristo Rey Miami High School became the 39th member of the largest college-and-career preparatory network of high school and the first in Miami to exclusively serve the hard-working students from communities underrepresented in higher education and whose families’ economic reality restricts their access to a quality college and career preparatory curriculum.

Education at Cristo Rey occurs in the classroom and across corporate offices throughout the city. The school’s unique educational model combines college preparatory coursework with five days of professional corporate work experience each month. The work study program provides funding for students’ education and allows them to gain valuable professional work experience, grow in self-confidence, cultivate a strong network of professional relationships, and realize the relevance of a college education to achieve their career goals.

Job partners benefit in gaining access to a diverse pool of trained, reliable, successful student-workers while giving back to their community by mentoring and cultivating tomorrow’s workforce. Cristo Rey Miami High School is creating a 21st Century pipeline of skilled workers ready for corporate America.

The education model has proven successful, with students from Cristo Rey attending college at higher rates than any other socio-demographic group and graduating with their bachelor’s degree at twice the rate of their peers.

The school’s inaugural year has been marked by remarkable growth and accomplishment, with first-year students showcasing an unwavering commitment to academic excellence, college readiness, and professional development. Achievements in the classroom include average student growth of 2.25 grade levels in math (as measured by NWEA MAP assessment) and the induction of 21 students with a 3.0-plus GPA into the National Beta Honor Club. Additionally, through the school’s dual enrollment program in partnership with Miami-Dade College, 41 percent of ninth-grade students earned college credits. At work, students earned more than $500,000 towards their education and 99 percent met or exceeded workplace expectations as reported by their supervisors.

Looking ahead, Cristo Rey Miami High School will welcome a second class of students for the 2023-24 school year. As the school family expands, the community anticipates the positive impact that these new students will bring and the opportunities that lie ahead for their personal and academic growth. The successes of Cristo Rey Miami High School’s inaugural year set a strong foundation for the future.
