How quickly is seems that time passes us by. August marks the beginning to the end of
summer and summer vacations. It also marks the beginning of the 2023/24 school year.
As we prepare to go back to school, please remember to take advantage of the back to
school tax free holidays that begin July 24, 2023 through August 6, 2023, then again for
two weeks from January 1, 2024 through January 14, 2024. The first day of school for the
2023/24 school year is Monday, August 21, 2023. The last day of school is Monday, June
10, 2024. Please visit the Broward County School Board’s website at
https://www.browardschools.com for more information on programs and initiatives to
be aware of, and to get grade specific supply lists and key dates. Students who are bus
riders should be registered to ride at: https://tfsweb.browardschools.com/ride.
I would personally like to acknowledge all the educators and administrators for all they
do to facilitate learning, and I wish everyone a safe and wonderful school year. Also, feel
free to visit https://www.mobileschoolpantry.org/ for more information on how to sign
up for nutritious food distributions. We have to work together to just say no to hunger.
If you are in need of after school resources, please visit our city website at
www.cityofwestpark.org, or visit the Children’s Services Council of Broward County at
https://www.cscbroward.org/ for a comprehensive list of opportunities throughout the
county.
Please, also bear in mind that in the month of August we are still in hurricane season and
we need to always stay prepared. If you missed the Disaster Preparedness tax free holiday
in May/June, there is another tax free opportunity for two weeks beginning August 26,
2023 through September 8, 2023.
As a city, this month we will be focusing on our fiscal year budget that runs from
September 1st through October 31st. Come join the discussion so that we may ensure that
we are meeting the needs of the community first. If there are certain programs and
initiatives that you would like to see in our city/communities, the budget season would
be the best opportunity for you to assist in advocating for those things.
I encourage everyone to get involved, stay informed, and take action where warranted. I
would love to hear your ideas/ideals and work with you so that we can all love where we
live. You may contact me via email at: ktouchstone@cityofwestpark.org or via my cell at
