On Wednesday night, August 16, the Rotary Club of Pinecrest celebrated the installation of Clara Waterman Powell as its 2023-24 President and her new board of directors: Robert Bull, David Kinney, Bruce Seaton, Linda Dwyer, Noreen Timoney and Susan Lichtman. Also adding to the festivities was the induction of several Rotarians transferring membership to help build this club’s membership base. Among those new members officially joining the club that night were Juan Torres, Robert Bull, David McManus, Arlene Terrinonil, Noreen Timone, Shirley Pardon, Susan Lichtman, Ariel Gonzalez and Ronald Gerstl. Also included in the new members are Dave Anderson and Hugo Montaudon who could not make the meeting that night. With this expanded membership base, we can expect to see lots of great projects in the future.
Miami Dade County schools’ classes have begun and efforts to ensure children have the supplies needed prior to the start of the year were impressive. A Back-to-School Health Fair held at Charles Hadley Park on Saturday, July 29, was a great chance for hundreds of youngsters to get immunizations, health checkups, educational materials and more. The Rotary Club of Coral Gables (RCCG) was on hand with a dozen or so volunteers to give away 312 back packs loaded with supplies and assist with other services provided by Angie Dawkins Organization. Among the many volunteers with this writer watching the grateful faces of the kids that day were RCCG’s Frank Sexton, Dr. Phil Boswell, Bruce Kerestes, Greg Martini, Sally Baumgartner, Yoli Woodbridge, Dipak Joshi, Hadley and Jennifer Williams, Yasi Orozco, Bill Quesenberry and fiancée Chie-Kyoung Hoban.
Rotarian and Sr. Vice President of Marketing & Communications for South Florida PBS, Jeneissy Azcuy, was also there with her SFPBS cohorts Anabel Cardenas and Victoria Gallo to hand out resource materials. As a special treat, they brought along one of their Kids Vision characters, Xavier Riddle, as well as Miss Penny to the delight of the little ones who love her shows.
Teachers and supporters of the Dr. Marvin Dunn Academy for Community Education (ACE) were treated to an annual End of Summer breakfast hosted by long time benefactors, Lynn Bauer and Dr. Hal Wanless. During the event, Hal asked the teachers to fill out a wish list for their classrooms while Lynn collected checks from several guests for Principal Dr. Deborah Carter’s special fund. An especially popular figure at the Denny’s breakfast was Dr. Jose Chaviano, a dentist who has provided lots of free dental services for students and even some teachers. Thanks to the collection at the breakfast and proceeds from the Coral Gables Woman’s Club’s Gringo Bingo the following day, ACE will get yet another check to help grant those wishes as proceeds from the August 15 event at Clutch Burger is being shared between ACE and Tucker Elementary. Among the many enjoying the breakfast that morning were Mayra and Carlos Rossi, Rita and Saesha Tennyson, Ruth Martinez, Hank Langston, and Luis Valenzuela.
Finally, with the start of classes we should all remember that our Miami Dade County Public Library System (MDCPLS) offers invaluable resources for young and old alike. As students begin the new school year, your library offers everything from tutoring programs, a mobile device lending program, classes in multiple languages, digital online content, free home delivery service, passport services and so much more. Ellen Book at the Pinecrest Library is a great “go to” resource for those in this community. For a better picture of the MDCPLS’s scope, please use the link below to watch my recent interview with Ray Baker, MDCPLS Director, at
