The Villagers, an organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of historic sites in Miami-Dade County, recently awarded a $2,500 grant to further the preservation work at Miami’s Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum.
The grant was used to furnish tables and chairs for the meeting space in the museum. The museum also is the meeting place for Girl Scout Troop #1877, Overtown, and other community groups.
“This was the first year the BPM had applied for a grant from us and we were very happy we could fund this project,” said Kelley Schild, Villagers’ first vice president. “Our members enjoyed touring the beautifully curated site and getting a deeper understanding about the history and challenges of Black police officers in Miami.”
From 1944 to 1963 African American police and judges worked out of separate facilities from the main Miami facilities. There is no other known structure in the U.S. that was designed, devoted to, and operated as a separate station and court for Blacks.

The Villagers have awarded more than 230 grants to over 80 local endangered sites and organizations in Miami-Dade County.
