Deering Estate Artist-in-Residence and Emmy-award winning filmmaker Marlon Johnson will presentThe Retrofit, an interdisciplinary series inside the Deering Estate theater, on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 4 p.m.
The Retrofit is a five-part multimedia film and live performance series at the intersection of the arts, natural environment, and social equity. The Retrofit is a campaign to reimagine spaces and expressions while celebrating a shared foundation.
Hosted by Miami native Carla Hill and curated by Marlon Johnson, this series champions the transformative power of the arts through storytelling and invites audiences along for the ride. The screening and performance will take place indoors inside the Deering Estate theater. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to start time. A complimentary cocktail hour will take place outdoors with live music from 3 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at www.miamidadeparks.com.
This event culminates the first season of The Retrofit and will present the world premiere of the first season of On Campus With… a short film series that Marlon developed as part of his residency at the Deering Estate. The series explores the intimate impressions of artists, researchers, and staff, and the work they are doing at the Deering Estate.
On Campus With… invites us to re-consider the site as a campus, a multi-faced complex of buildings, resources, history and people. Each episode provides a glimpse at the important work being conducted on site in the form of art, history and the environment. For the world premiere, The Retrofit will include episodes featuring artists Dr. Keshia Abraham and Lee Pivnik, as well as the Deering Estate Conservation and Research team.
Marlon Johnson is the Charles Deering McCormick Fellow of the Deering Estate’s Artist-in-Residence program. The fellowship is sponsored in part by the Deering Estate Foundation and the Charles Deering McCormick Friends of Art Fund.
Guest speakers will include:
Dr. Keshia Abraham earned her BA in English (Women’s studies concentration) from Spelman College and her MA and PhD in Comparative Literature from Binghamton University. This Fulbright Scholar has served as dean of Arts and Sciences, tenured associate professor, senior director of International Education, and senior director of Diversity and Inclusion.
She is the recipient of the 2022 Peter A. Wollitzer Award and co-author of Black Victorians: Hidden From History with John Woolf. Her creativity is rooted in a curiosity and commitment to intercultural learning. She explores creative theorizing through the writing and performance of autobiography, short story, and essay while providing support to international educators.
Lee Pivnik is a Miami-based artist, working predominantly in sculpture, video and social practice. His work takes inspiration from living systems and other species to imagine a future based on mutualistic relationships instead of extractive economies. Pivnik has been an artist-in-residence at Biosphere 2 and Atlantic Center for the Arts.
He has been awarded Knight Arts Challenge Awards in 2019 and 2021, and an Ellie from Oolite Arts in 2020. He founded the Institute of Queer Ecology, which produces interdisciplinary programming that oscillates between curating exhibitions and directly producing artworks/projects as a collaborative organism.
Ana Alexandra Rojas is the Deering Estate’s Conservation and Research Specialist. Rojas handles the Cultural and Ecological Field Station, research and conservation projects and building partnerships with a multitude of natural resource agencies and universities. She holds a BS (2016) and MS (2019) in Environmental Studies from Florida International University. She also teaches environmental science as a professor for Miami-Dade College.
Rojas is originally from Bogota, Colombia has always had a passion for the natural environment. Her goal is to not only further research in the socio-ecological realm but to teach others to appreciate, respect, and care for the nature around them.
