Learn about Deering Estate’s programs and partners at this year’s Discover Deering Day on Saturday, Oct.14.
Come view a partial solar eclipse, go on a nature walk and discover what is coming up at Deering Estate for the 2023-24 season. The day will include a full lineup of nature, history and cultural programs.
The main event will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with before and after hour programs available by pre-registration.
Activities and Programs include:
Before and After-Hours Programs (Limited Capacity – Preregistration required)
Bird Walk: 7:30-10 a.m.
Recognized as a globally important habitat for the conservation of bird populations, Deering Estate is part of the Biscayne Bay IBA (Important Bird Area). On this walk search for some of the Deering Estate’s estimated 170 resident and migratory bird species.
Community Action Day Volunteer Program: 9 a.m.-noon
Be a part of building community, environmental stewardship and conservation during these family-friendly volunteer opportunities. Activities may include invasive plant removal, planting, mulching, and cleaning up litter in and around the Deering Estate. Volunteers must be 15 or older.
Herp Tour: 7-9 p.m.
Join a Deering Estate naturalist on a “Herp Tour.” The tour begins with a chance to get up close to Deering Estate’s Living Classroom specimens before going out on a hike throughout the property’s restricted natural areas. Tour meets at the Visitor Center.
Main Event Programs: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. (gate opens at 10 a.m.)
General Admission: $15 for adults and $7 for children (ages 4-14); Free for children under 4 years old. Free for Deering Estate Foundation Members (show membership card at the Ticket Booth).
Vendor booths: Enjoy activities and learn about programs at vendor booths. Pick up a grab and go craft at the info booth to complete during your visit or take it home for later.
Deering Estate merchandise and the Legacy Deering Estate Coffee Table Book will be available for purchase.
Artists in Residence Studios: The Carriage House and Power House make up the Artist Village at the Deering Estate, providing studio and exhibit space for local artists working in different disciplines. Interact with and learn about their areas of expertise as they create and display original artwork.
Exhibition: Andres Cabrera Garcia: Circumscribed Landscapes, Garden Room – Richmond Cottage.
Exhibition: Yolanda Sanchez: All the Light We Cannot See by Adriana Herrera, Great Hall Gallery – Stone House.
Self-Guided Nature Trails: Explore some of the nature trails on-site and use the free iNaturalist mobile app to identify flora and fauna.
Nature Preserve Tours: 10:30 a.m., 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.
Walk an ancient Tequesta Trail, and learn about the rich cultural history of a people and way of life that vanished long ago. Space is limited, sign up for tours at event.
Lighthouse Cruise with Biscayne National Park departs from Boat Basin: 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (additional fee)
Departing from the Deering Estate on a comfortable riding 45-foot Corinthian catamaran, this four-hour tour will allow you to experience Biscayne National Park in a new light! Limited Capacity. Tickets and pre-registration required.
Partial Solar Eclipse Astronomy Viewing: noon-3 p.m.
It is estimated that the partial solar eclipse viewing will begin at 11:56 a.m., maximum viewing at 1:33 p.m., and ending at 3:11 p.m. Complimentary protective viewing glasses will be provided with general admission/membership on a first come, first serve basis, beginning at 10 a.m. One pair of glasses per group or family, first come, first served, and based on availability. While supplies last.
