Rotarians and others looking to clean up our shorelines and neighborhoods were busy at work all over the county on Sept. 16. Rotary District 6990’s Environment chair Robert Bull helped coordinate a huge group of Rotarians for the coastal cleanups.
It was messy but very satisfying work and a surprise visit from Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava was certainly appreciated as she joined the effort.
While Rotarians were on the coast picking up trash, members of the Coral Gables Woman’s Club gathered that same morning to clean up areas around their clubhouse and beyond under the direction of their Environment chair Frances Yec. Members collected 87.7 pounds of trash around their clubhouse expanding their area to three blocks in all directions to the appreciation of neighbors who now recognize this club’s effort.
Among the many helping Frances at this recent clean up were Maya Bell, Nancy Desmangels, Margaret Romero, Jelibel Pena, Meredeth and John McKissick, Alma Suarez and Ruth Martinez. Frances invites members, or anyone who wants to volunteer a few hours to join them, to meet at 9 a.m. in front of their clubhouse, 1001 E. Ponce de Leon Blvd., the second Saturday of every month. If you want to join the effort, please bring gloves and pickers if you have them.
In other news, Mangoheads, supporters and sponsors of the King Mango Strut parade in Coconut Grove, gathered on Sept. 13, poolside at the Mayfair Hotel, for the 40th King Mango Strut poster and theme reveal.
King Mango Productions, an all-volunteer and donation-funded organization, stages the politically satirical parade through the streets of Coconut Grove every year to the delight of the usual 10,000 plus spectators. Mango Mixers are scheduled each month leading up to the next Strut which will take place Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, starting at 2 p.m.
2024 parade directors Howard Spiegel and Nathan Kurland always are looking for more entertaining groups to participate in this hilarious parade. For information about organizing a Strut group, being in a group, being a sponsor or to simply volunteer go to http://www.kingmangostrut.org or follow at King Mango Strut on Facebook and Instagram.
Another fun-loving group are the members of the Woman’s Club of Homestead (WCH).
These women and one man (Councilmember Larry Roth) know how to have a good time and to raise funds for the club’s charitable outreach efforts. Their Sept. 8 fundraiser brought lots of laughs and the craziest costumes ever.
With many women looking pregnant, others in slippers and bathrobes and curlers, this made the women from the Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) supporting their sister club look way overdressed attired in the club’s Centennial shirts.
To better explain, the theme was “A Trailer Park Tragedy Murder Mystery.” The setting was the clubhouse decorated to resemble the Flamingo Trailer Park with inflatable flamingos, wading pools, and beach chairs with a southern menu from collard greens to pulled pork, beef and more. The open bar included everything from multi favored Kool-Aid and moonshine to a regular open bar with appetizers that also brought a chuckle or two: bologna and cheese sandwiches on white bread cut in quarters, canned cheese topping with crackers. You get the idea.
WCH President Amy Spadaro and her club pulled off a great event with board member Traci Cope Tam (trailer park owner) and her fellow actors doing a great job.
Every second Wednesday of the month, the Coral Gables Bar and the Rotary Club of Coral Gables hold a joint mini fundraising mixer. This Sept. 13, members, judges and friends gathered at Altagarcia, 276 Alhambra, a restaurant that just opened four months ago and has a great happy hour menu and food. Owner Carlos Chamut, who relocated from Argentina, welcomed guests including Coral Gables Bar president Bruce Bounds, RCCG president Frank Sexton, and Cristy Garcia.
Finally, on Oct. 10, Coral Gables Woman’s Club (CGWC) Gringo Bingo fundraiser has moved to Bay 13 across from the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. Bay 13 owners are from Australia, so, the new name for the event is Dingo Gringo Bingo with Gringo, Steven Bradley, as emcee and music by celebrity DJ Germain. CGWC will share proceeds for the October event with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. Tickets are $30 and include one beer or house wine, 12 games, great prizes for winners and lots of fun. To RSVP send email to Gloria@cnews.net.
