The Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) is hiring waste truck driver operators.
Annual salaries start at $43,710.16 and includes a benefits package with health insurance coverage which drivers are immediately eligible for upon hire, a “4×10” work week (four days on, three days off each week) and many other benefits.
Applicants must have a valid Class B or higher rated Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and at least two years of experience operating medium or heavy-duty automotive equipment, such as automated or manual garbage trucks, large dump trucks, tractor-trailers, passenger buses or similar equipment.
“The Solid Waste Department is a great place to work. We have several employees who began their careers here as drivers and moved up into management, and we have others who were happy driving their routes in the neighborhoods and retired as drivers,” said Michelle Sifontes, chief, DSWM Human Resources Division. “It’s a very rewarding job and the benefits are very competitive.”
In addition to the previously mentioned pay, DSWM Waste Truck Drivers are eligible for a $70 biweekly premium, an additional 5 percent Waste Collections Disposal pay supplement, annual merit increases based on performance, and a yearly uniform maintenance allowance. Drivers also receive 13 paid holidays and four “floating” holidays (paid days off).
“We offer all our employees an incredible benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, wellness programs, paid leave, sick leave, contributory membership in the Florida Retirement System, and so much more,” Sifontes said. “And we offer opportunities for career growth with on-the-job training and promotions from within the department.”
DSWM provides waste collection and recycling services more than 350,000 households in unincorporated Miami-Dade County and the following 10 municipalities: Aventura, Cutler Bay, Doral, Miami Gardens, Miami Lakes, Opa-locka, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, Sunny Isles Beach, and Sweetwater. Waste truck drivers play an important role in providing exceptional waste collection services that protect, preserve and improve the environment and the quality of life for residents in Miami-Dade County.
Driver safety is important at DSWM; on-the-job training and safety training are provided.
Both personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies are also provided.
Qualified applicants will be subject to a screening process including, but not limited to:
• Verification of the current status of commercial driver license.
• Review of entire driving record (State of Florida and current/previous employers).
• Structured interviews, background checks, physical exam and employment verification, to include attendance and disciplinary records, and a performance assessment.
Vacancies may occur at any of several locations countywide. The candidate must be able to work holidays and at various locations as assigned. All assignments will be based on departmental needs. Waste truck driver operators are considered essential employees and are required to work in emergency situations such as preparation before and recovery following hurricanes, tropical storms, and other emergencies.
