Union Leaders Host Press Conference on Decertification and Unveil Next Steps

On December 18th, the United Teachers of Dade (UTD) uncovered the impact of dynamic shifts in retirements, new hires, resignations, and terminations within Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Due to these shifts, UTD did not meet the new membership density requirement imposed by Senate Bill 256, which raised the threshold from 50% to 60% of dues-paying members. While this development triggers a mandatory certification election, the process of obtaining Showing of Interest cards from at least 30% of our bargaining unit has been well underway. The results continue to show that M-DCPS employees stand in solidarity with UTD.  This legislative shift, viewed by many as a draconian union-busting bill, continues to ignite a powerful wave of commitment and solidarity among Miami-Dade County educators and support staff—representing the third-largest school district nationwide. UTD will outline what’s next for the Union while summarizing their collective efforts.

WHEN: Tuesday, January 15th, 2024, at 11:00 AM

WHERE: United Teachers of Dade Headquarters, 5553 NW 36th St, Miami Springs, Florida 33166

WHO:  Karla Hernández-Mats, UTD President

Antonio “Tony” White, UTD First Vice-President

Mindy Grimes-Festge, UTD Secretary/Treasurer

In the face of SB 256, a legislative onslaught aimed to destroy labor unions in Florida, UTD has confronted these challenges head-on, resiliently amplifying the value of the union and workers’ rights amidst a barrage of adverse propaganda targeting educators. UTD has successfully negotiated its most substantial contract to date, a monumental achievement benefiting all M-DCPS employees. This groundbreaking contract incorporates provisions from a locally passed referendum and allocates $125 million exclusively for pay raises. UTD serves as the backbone for the workforce of the third-largest employer in the county, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). Without the collective power of a union, M-DCPS faculty and staff would lack a robust advocate for their compensation, healthcare, and comprehensive benefits, including pensions and improved working conditions.
