This spring, New York Times bestselling author and Florida native Chanel Cleeton returns with a dual-timeline historical fiction that can only be set in South Florida. It is a gothic novel that also doubles as a love letter to the Sunshine State.
In The House on Biscayne Bay (Berkley Trade Original; on sale April 2, 2024), Cleeton weaves a captivating gothic that combines Cuban-American history and murderous scandal set against the backdrop of a grand Miami mansion and the dark secrets hidden within its walls. It’s a tale that is sure to please fans of Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Mexican Gothic and Daphne du Maurier’sRebecca.
Cleeton was inspired to bring her own gothic-style mansion to life off the page by some of Florida’s most well-known and prized real estate – such as Vizcaya in Miami. The author is from Florida, and even dedicates the novel “To Miami… for everything.”
In her Author’s Note, Cleeton writes: “While Marbrisa is a fictional home, as are the characters in the novel, in writingThe House on Biscayne Bay, I was inspired by Florida’s natural landscape and animals, and by many of the grand homes — some of which are mentioned in the novel — that were built in South Florida during the 20th Century. I wanted to convey the spirit of the art and architecture that graced these estates as well as the promise of Miami that drew so many down south.”
About the author
Originally from Florida, Chanel Cleeton grew up on stories of her family’s exodus from Cuba following the events of the Cuban Revolution. Her passion for politics and history continued during her years spent studying in England, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations from Richmond, The American International University in London, and a master’s degree in global politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Chanel also received her Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
